“Adam?” Nikita asked as she eased the door open a crack after knocking. Adam turned away from the computer and smiled at Nikita. “You’re going to be my stepmom.”
“That’s what you wanted, right?” Nikita inquired as she opened the door more but did not enter the room yet. Adam nodded his head eagerly. “Yeah… I mean, my father loved you even when he wasn’t sure that he would see you again… and although it hasn’t been long… it’s hard to really think about that time before you were living here.”
“But I’ve made it complicated,” Nikita pointed out and Adam rolled his eyes. “What are you doing standing there? You can come in.”
“I didn’t want to assume,” Nikita spoke as she entered the room and looked around. “You are growing up and you are going to want more and more privacy.”
Adam rubbed his forehead and frowned. “Is this going to be a conversation about Lisa?”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “I’d like to know why you did what you did… but if you don’t want to talk about it.”
“I’ve made you talk about a lot of things you didn’t want to talk about,” Adam admitted as he turned his chair more to look at Nikita. “And I didn’t wake up this morning thinking that I was going to go and meet Lisa.”
“But yet you plotted… and lied…”
“Does that scare you?” Adam asked as he rubbed his hands along his jeans. Nikita nodded her head up and down. “And I’m sure that it really scares your father. You know that we didn’t get into Section without reason, Adam.”
“But there is no Section now.”
“But there are still things that can get you tied up into bad things,” Nikita sighed as she sat on the edge of Adam’s bed that was so neatly made. She shook her head as she saw how tidy Adam was. That was so much like his father. She would rather have to deal with Adam being messy and refusing to clean his room than him being this smart.
“I’m too smart to get involved into things like that,” Adam snorted as he shook his head. “Maybe when I’m older I can be the angel.”
“No,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “That isn’t an option, Adam.”
“I was joking.”
“It was a bad one,” Nikita rasped as she rubbed her hands nervously around her cheeks. “It’s a tool… to still be a force of good change… to make up my errors… but it will end with me too.”
Adam tilted his head and looked at Nikita out of the corner of his eye. Nikita was studying him and she turned her head slightly. “None of this gets away from the question about why you went to see Lisa.”
Adam shrugged his shoulders as he had to admit he couldn’t get away from the question. “Why is it so important?”
“I’m engaged to your father, Adam. Do you think I don’t know about the answering a question with another question trick?” Nikita quipped as she didn’t even blink with Adam’s question. Adam nervously chuckled and then shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know why… believe me… I didn’t plan for days on doing it… it just hit me that I wanted to meet her.”
“There has to be a reason why,” Nikita rasped as she leaned forward. “There is a reason why you felt that you needed to tell your father that I wanted him to ask me to marry him. There was a reason why I had to rescue Lisa… and there is a reason why I would do something like that again for several others that are out there in the world, Adam. There is a reason why.”
“I didn’t spend much time at all in Section… but I’ve heard about it… but she was there… and she is my age,” Adam stammered as he shook his head and then shrugged his shoulders. “I wanted her to know that she isn’t alone.”
“Her time isn’t spent on Section… and what her experience of Section was… is probably much different than what you think it was,” Nikita outlined softly as she shifted and placed her arms behind her to lean back slightly. “She was too young to have seen the ugly underbelly, Adam. She hasn’t heard the stories you have heard about.”
“And I have heard sanitized versions,” Adam pointed out and Nikita chuckled. “If you haven’t hacked your way into more of the real versions.”
“Not much,” Adam shrugged his shoulders as he wasn’t about to incriminate himself in front of Nikita. He also knew now to completely lie. “But you have to admit… it is hard to be by yourself and not able to talk about it.”
“She has a therapist, Adam,” Nikita added and Adam nodded his head. “I understand that… but it’s probably wise that we know each other… in case something happens while we are at school.”
Nikita paused and frowned. She hated to admit it, but Adam had a point. “She isn’t going to school until the fall.”
“Then having a friend now is a good thing too,” Adam countered smoothly. Nikita shook her head as she sat up. “Are you upset that your father knew to ask me to marry him?”
“Hell no!”
“Adam,” Nikita exclaimed even as she laughed at Adam’s statement.
“Come on, Nikita. I’m a teenager…. And I’m going to swear form now and then,” Adam tossed the statement out there as he shook his head. “But I’m relieved he asked… I’m surprised you said yes so easily…”
“But you knew somehow that my feelings… had changed.”
“They changed after you got Lisa,” Adam identified and Nikita nodded her head. “About that time.”
“I was worried that it was going to take finding your daughter.”
“No,” Nikita swung her head from side to side. “You were afraid that if we found her first, that once she was with us that I would leave you three.”
Adam chilled and Nikita watched as he turned pale. Nikita stood up and walked to the chair. “I love that you worry about me leaving so much, Adam. It means a lot to me.”
“We all worry about that,” Adam rasped as he blinked his eyes as he tried to maintain some strength and not cry. He didn’t know how Nikita could do it. She cut right into those raw emotions that he didn’t want to admit too. She did it so quickly and he never saw it coming.
“I can’t make that go away soon enough, Adam. You might always be worried that I’ll leave… and I guess I’ll be worried that I’ll feel the need to run away again too…” Nikita spoke truthfully as she touched Adam’s shoulder. “But this really helps.”
Adam looked at his shoulder and saw the ring. He looked up at Nikita and smiled. “He did well.”
“Your father said that you pointed a ring out like this one before,” Nikita indicated with a smile. She waited as Adam nodded his head up and down. “Before Christmas.”
“I knew,” Nikita smiled again as she pulled her hand away and then walked to the door. “Are you ready for us to be a family?”
“Haven’t we already been a family?” Adam questioned as he smiled back at Nikita.
