Michael rolled his head slightly to the side as he walked down the hallway slowly, feeling as if the house was completely silent. Almost everyone had gone outside to shovel with what seemed like hours ago and Michael was wondering how much longer it was going to be until they came back inside.
He had gone into Davenport’s apartment and took a shower which made him feel so much better. It helped take the haze that he felt that he was walking around in away and he was starting to feel more like himself. He knew that it was quicker that most people would be recovering, but that was fine – it was absolutely necessary.
As he pushed the curtain to the side, Michael was stunned to see the sidewalk completely cleared and everyone else was missing.
Where was Nikita? Where was Adam? Walter? Davenport? Mick?
“They got your walk done quickly,” Ellie explained as she came out of the living room. “You are looking better.”
Michael looked at Ellie and nodded his head. “More like myself.”
“You are still recovering, Michael,” Ellie warned carefully. “You can’t push yourself too much. There is no shoveling in your future.”
Michael looked outside and shook his head. “But the neighbor is done too…”
“Well, I guess the neighbor beyond them is elderly… and the people across the street came over to help them… it started to snowball as it was easier for large groups of people to shovel one house out than it was for everyone to shovel by themselves,” Ellie explained and Michael stepped away. “So… they have continued to shovel?”
“Took a break over at the lab for hot chocolate,” Ellie nodded her head up and down. “They were going to come back on the far street… they are probably going to be back soon.”
“It’s been hours, right?”
“Yes,” Ellie nodded her head up and down. She touched Michael’s arm and smiled. “It was Nikita’s idea.”
“She was exhausted to start with,” Michael protested and Ellie shrugged her shoulders. “Don’t you think that this sounds a little bit like the angel?”
“It sounds like a woman who was pissed at Adam,” Michael shook his head and Ellie snorted. “Come on… we should get some hot chocolate on also… I started some stew earlier…”
Michael walked into the kitchen and Ellie pointed to the seat. It was clear that Michael was not to help out. Michael followed the doctor’s orders and settled into the seat, still trying to process what she had said. “I know that Nikita was upset at Adam…”
“That disappeared as soon as Adam was the first one to help Nikita start shoveling your neighbor out…. It’s forgotten,” Ellie shook her head slightly from side to side. Michael tilted his head and she chuckled. “I talked to Davenport. Nikita and Adam were plotting the course… making sure that the most people were helped… gads, making plans to pick up on this tomorrow…”
Michael rubbed his hands together and looked at Ellie. “How can she even be doing this right now?”
“How did she ever be the angel?” Ellie asked with a shrug of her shoulders. She checked on the stew and turned on the milk on low heat before sitting down across from Michael. “Maybe being the angel wasn’t a bad thing.”
“It allows her to escape from her reality…”
“It might have been a way to cope. She was talking to people out there, Michael. It’s been a couple days without her really talking,” Ellie suggested as she tapped her hands on the table. “Let’s not advocate her going out in the dark doing dangerous things… but doing these kinds of things helps her spirit Michael. Just like how much she likes doing things for all of us… we know that she doesn’t have to… but it brings her some temporary happiness.”
“Temporary,” Michael pointed out as he leaned forward. He felt a twinge and he winced. Ellie waited for Michael to lean back against the chair. “I told you that you are still healing.”
Michael groaned as he rolled his eyes.
“You are not to work for at least two weeks, Michael,” Ellie directed and Michael’s mouth dropped. “And what am I to do?”
“Maybe if Nikita is having some temporary happiness… she’ll find a way to start talking about the things that don’t make her happy…. But I wouldn’t try to address this head on… you are going to have to use some finesse,” Ellie stood up as she thought she saw something outside. That was soon confirmed as it was clear that everyone was on the porch, stomping the snow off of their boots. Moments later, the noise vibrated in the house.
“Now if the city could just plow the roads like we were taking care of sidewalks!” Walter declared as he started to unwrap clothing from his body. He watched as Davenport walked down the hallway and kissed Ellie gently. “Davenport and Ellie… sitting in a tree…”
“Oh, grow up, Walter,” Davenport declared as he threw his glove at the older man. Walter chortled happily as everyone continued to get out of their outerwear and Ellie told them about the hot chocolate that was ready for them and that dinner would be ready in about an hour and a half.
Nikita felt all the energy she had drain out of her as soon as she got into the house. It was almost difficult taking the coat off of her body. It felt as if her arms had swelled to twice the size they were. She was the last one left in the hallway as everyone else rushed into the kitchen. She sat on the stairs to take her boots off.
“You look tired,” Michael spoke as he looked at Nikita. She lifted her head as she dropped her boot. She studied him and nodded her head slightly. “You look better.”
“I feel a bit better,” Michael admitted as he folded his hands in front of him. “But I could use a nap. I think you need one too.”
“I won’t wake up for dinner if I take a nap,” Nikita sighed as she shook her head from side to side but stopped when the pain radiated throughout her body.
“Maybe we can eat early… I think the angel deserves special treatment,” Michael suggested and wagged her finger. “No angel out there… just a neighbor… and angel would get the roads plowed… and that isn’t happening.”
Michael watched as Nikita stiffly stood up and had to wonder how she managed to help with all of that shoveling while she had slept sitting up last night. He walked to her and cupped her face. He placed a tender kiss on her head, her nose and then her lips. “Let’s get that early dinner… and then go upstairs to bed.”
“Oh no,” Nikita shook her head. “You are under doctor’s orders… I’m not going to take you upstairs…”
“I told you that I didn’t need a hospital bed,” Michael took Nikita’s hand into his as he started to walk towards the kitchen. He looked right at Ellie, knowing that he was running a risk of being told no by the doctor. “It’s ok for us to go upstairs to bed tonight, right?”
“One trip a day for the next couple days will be allowed,” Ellie spoke while Michael could tell that she really would have said no if it had not been Nikita standing next to him. Michael smiled and looked at Nikita. “And how about an early dinner?”
“I think everyone wants an early dinner,” Ellie laughed as Davenport clapped his hands together. “Turn that heat up high… I’m going to make some grilled cheese sandwiches too…”
Michael sat down first and he was relieved when Nikita sat next to him. Maybe this was exactly what she needed.
