“Nikita, you can come closer to me,” Michael chided her gently as he leaned back against the headboard and saw Nikita on the edge of the bed, trying not to touch him. Michael had watched this for a bit and he just wanted Nikita to curl into his body. He needed to feel her like that. “You are exhausted and I want to hold you.”
“You are healing,” Nikita spoke to the far wall as she did not look at Michael. Michael shook his head and touched her back. “I need to feel you to heal, Kita.”
Nikita rolled onto her back to look at Michael. “I’m sure that Dr. Hlad doesn’t want me in bed… so we should be careful.”
“Ellie would have told us if she didn’t want you in here with me… and I think it is more important that we are together,” Michael gently spoke as he reached out and touched Nikita’s hair. “You are going to fall asleep and you aren’t going to move around.”
“What if I hit you?”
“Kita,” Michael shook his head. “I have one stitch… you can’t hurt me like you think you can,” Michael whispered as he could see that her physical body was ready to curl into his body. It was her mind that was keeping her where she was.
Nikita did roll her head closer to Michael and looked at his chest. “I’m sore, Michael.”
“And you know that you’ll feel better if you are getting body heat from me,” Michael tried to tease Nikita into being closer to him. She shifted her body over slightly. She still didn’t really touch him, but now Michael could reach out and stroked her forehead without too much of a stretch. “Go ahead and close your eyes.”
“It’s too early…”
“You didn’t sleep much last night.”
“How did you know that?”
“I watched you,” Michael admitted as he saw Nikita’s blue eyes glaring at him. “I didn’t sleep the entire time either... but I didn’t say up the entire time either.”
“You had medicine,” Nikita pointed out and Michael smirked. “Did you want some?”
“I should have been working on things,” Nikita shook her head and then she closed her eyes. “I should be doing things now.”
“The only thing you need to do is sleep,” Michael explained as he started to rub at Nikita’s forehead, seeing quickly that her eyes couldn’t stay open with his touch like that. He didn’t say anything more but he saw Nikita part her lips to protest, but her body’s needs were winning the battle against her brain.
With time, time that Michael didn’t monitor, Nikita’s body moved closer to his body and Michael could see her body relaxing more the closer that she got to him. “Oh, Kita.”
Michael was so concerned about her. It was more than just her not sleeping and the fact that she was not talking about flashes that he knew that she had. It was everything, in a whole, that scared Michael.
He knew that he was rarely the one injured or sick, but also knew that when he was hurt or injured, or even poisoned, Nikita was a possessive guard dog. He realized now that she was probably the strongest when she was protecting someone, and that was how Nikita was with him when he was not 100% and she was. It was almost to a fault with Nikita. She would sacrifice herself over and over again for his benefit, and clearly that had not changed being on the outside.
Then Michael felt the concern that he had for Nikita being afraid on a different level. They were on the outside now. He had never been hurt since there was no more Section One. He didn’t know what she thought or felt, but he had to wonder if it was as painful as it had been when he knew that she was hurt while being the angel and getting beaten up by that child abuser. It had to be different because she also had to be afraid about what Michael being sick meant to Adam.
Add into this mess that it was Adam’s birthday, something that Michael was trying to keep Nikita from overreacting. He knew that Nikita would do anything that she could for them, but that she didn’t see her being as part of them. Michael easily could tell that Nikita thought that it was Michael and Adam… and then Nikita to the side.
Michael stroked her face and pressed a kiss down to her cheek. “I love you so much, Kita… I wish I knew what to do for you at times… but I’m willing to try whatever it takes… so you know that this is our family… you are my family with Adam.”
He knew that she wasn’t awake and she wasn’t going to respond. He wasn’t sure if Nikita didn’t hear it, but he did not care. Michael needed to say it. Nikita, if awake, would protest every word. She wouldn’t just take in the words that he needed to say. Michael wanted to say them more and more, but he couldn’t stand the pain that it gave him inside of his heart when Nikita fought against his sediment – what he knew to be true.
Michael knew that it was bordering on being like he was in Section. Often there were things that he wanted to tell her and admit, but he did not dare. It would have been because it could have caused her more pain, gotten her hurt, or worse, cancelled. Instead he took the statements that Nikita flung at him and endured that pain because he knew that he could, and Nikita couldn’t.
What he wanted to tell Nikita should have been easy. It should have been a moment of happiness to hear that she was part of his family. It shouldn’t be something that she protested. Yet, she would protest and it wasn’t worth hearing those protests when to Michael, they did not matter.
“We are going to have the best family ever, Kita… I’m fighting for that… and I’ll fight for that for both of us if you can’t,” Michael whispered as he shifted back on the bed, even though he didn’t feel tired at all. But he wanted to sleep beside her, just as he said he was going to do.
Michael looked up at the ceiling and then over to Nikita’s face as he carefully moved her closer to his body. “I have us now… and someday… you’ll see that we have each other.”
