“I’m so glad to be home,” Nat sighed as he dropped his heavy coat onto the chair. His attention directly on Rhoda, who was humming while still in her scrubs. “How was it going back to work today?”

“Busy,” Rhoda chuckled as she placed the slotted spoon down and wrapped his arms around Nat. “We had days of patients that needed to get seen, lots of strained muscles… a couple broken bones.”

“I got to get one of our rookies finally home to their apartment today… he had been working around the shift and sleeping in the locker room between shifts,” Nat explained as he sat down and rolled his head back. “I think for five days… it’s going to take us two weeks to get back to normal.”

“As long as we get no more snow,” Rhoda pointed out and Nat shook his head. “Can’t have more snow… Valentine’s Day is coming and I have plans.”

“Oh?” Rhoda smiled gently as she headed towards her husband, but then his cell phone started to ring again. Rhoda rolled her eyes and moved back to the stove as Nat groaned. “Hello?”

“I told you not to call her to do anything more for you. How hard is it to listen to those directions?” Michael’s voice was loud and firm. Nat rubbed his forehead and swallowed. “I told you yesterday, Michael… I only called for the one set of results… and I haven’t talked to Nikita since.”

“Then why did she leave again?”

“To do something that I did not ask her to do,” Nat hissed back as he knew that Michael was frustrated with not being able to heal fast enough to take care of Nikita, but Nat didn’t like being blamed for it.

Especially since he only asked for that one thing.

“Really? How is she still doing things…”

“Ah, I think Nikita has been known to have her ways… I’m sure that the angel could easily find out what cases the police office might be having problems with… and what got submitted today was not for one of my cases,” Nat countered. “Why don’t you just talk to her?”

Rhoda turned to listen to Nat. He shook his head from side to side. Nat knew that Rhoda didn’t like what was going on and she also didn’t like Nat being upset about it. She tried to explain that Nikita was a complication. But Nat didn’t want Nikita to be a complication in his life like what was happening now.

So Nat dropped his head as he listened to Michael rant, something that was not like Michael at all. He was a man of little words and Nat knew that this was more because he was frustrated with Nikita’s actions.

Exhaling as Michael finally took a moment to take a breath of his own. “Michael, I promise you… I’ve told everyone in the office that you are on medical leave… I’m guessing that the results must be seen as a backlog that is coming thru as your assistant isn’t busy.”

“I’ve never had an assistant.”

“No one knows that but me,” Nat explained as he leaned his head back. “You need to talk to Nikita and get her to stop.”

“There is no talking to her.”

“That isn’t something that I can help you with,” Nat spoke and he waited for a response.

Instead, Michael disconnected the conversation.

“What’s going on?” Rhoda inquired as Nat closed his phone and pushed it across the table, away from his hands. Nat sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “I told you that Michael had to have his appendix removed.”

“Yeah,” Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “But it was a laparoscopy. Michael should be doing well.”

“But Nikita isn’t,” Nat snapped. Rhoda turned to turn the burner off. She stared at Nat and folded her hands across her lap. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Michael didn’t want me to tell… he was hoping that Nikita would get better,” Nat sighed as he looked at Rhoda. “I hate when they get into our lives like this.”

“They are why we got together,” Rhoda rasped as she moved towards the table. “Maybe I can talk to her.”

“She isn’t doing much talking.”

“That’s how I know Nikita the best,” Rhoda pointed out as she looked at Nat. Nat reached out and took her hands. “You’ve had just as a long day as I have had.”

“But Nikita needs me… my job is to help,” Rhoda explained as she leaned forward. “Nat… I owe her this.”

“How long are you going to own her?”

“For as long as I love you,” Rhoda replied. She leaned forward and kissed Nat. She knew that it was right thing to do.
