Nikita took her gloves hands away from the microscope and covered her mouth as she lightly coughed. She exhaled slowly and reached out for the box of gloves that she had to purchase because Michael’s were too large for her hands. She pulled off the gloves that she containminated and then put on new gloves.
“You should probably get that cough looked at,” Rhoda spoke from the doorway. Nikita whirled around and stared at Rhoda for a moment. “What are you doing here?”
“I was going to ask you the same thing. I thought this was Michael’s lab,” Rhoda stated as she tilted her head to the side, almost surprised that Nikita was talking as everyone had indicated that Nikita wasn’t talking much at all.
“Someone has to do this work.”
“But it isn’t for Nat,” Rhoda pointed out as she stepped forward. “That’s what you keep on telling Michael.”
“It’s easier that way,” Nikita firmly answered and Rhoda shook her head as she watched Nikita try to roll her shoulders back. It was clear that Nikita had some pain that way also. Rhoda shook her head and tried another tact. “You don’t need to do more, Nikita. You just have to be there for Michael.”
“He thinks about this work,” Nikita answered and Rhoda shook her head. “He thinks more about you.”
“You don’t know that,” Nikita declared as she turned back and finally snapped the gloves onto her hands. Rhoda was stunned that Nikita was just ignoring her and going back to work. Rhoda stayed right there for some amount of time.
Just as Nikita moved the sample off of the microscope, she had to turn and cough again. Rhoda took the opportunity and grabbed the box of gloves from Nikita. “You are letting yourself get run down.”
“I’m fine.”
“You look skinner than when you were doing all that angel stuff… and I’m sure that you have been doing a lot more as Michael has been recovering,” Rhoda placed the box of gloves behind her back. Nikita pulled the gloves off and shook her head. “It’s just a tickle in my throat. Nothing at all.”
“And your shoulders?”
“I’ve done a lot of shoveling.”
“That was done at least four or five days ago,” Rhoda pointed out and Nikita stood up. “I’m fine.”
“You should just get yourself checked out. Isn’t Ellie around?”
“Ellie isn’t my private doctor… and I don’t need a doctor,” Nikita hissed as she walked after to the computer and sat down. “Now… I’m busy.”
“Are you determined to crash and burn?” Rhoda questioned as she slammed the gloves back to the bench where Nikita had been working. “No one wants you to do that.”
“I’m doing what I have to do.”
“The last time you did what you had to do… you got beaten up because that man got the jump on you… you had a severe concussion… you were in the hospital.. Is that what it is going to take again?” Rhoda questioned as she felt the tears in her eyes.
Nikita just stared at her.
Rhoda swallowed hard as she pushed her hands thru her hair. “Everyone is here to help you. You just need to tell us about the flashes that you are having…”
“I am not having any PTSD flashes,” Nikita hissed loudly as she slammed her fists against the computer. “Why is everyone so sure that I am?”
“We can tell,” Rhoda whispered as she shook her head from side to side. “And we just want to help.”
“I don’t need help. Michael needs the help. That’s what I’m doing.”
“You should just spend the next couple days that he has left with his recovery with him… curl up in bed with him… watch television… go to a movie… spend the time with Michael,” Rhoda offered suggestions as she stood there and prayed that Nikita would listen to her.
Nikita turned her attention back to the computer and then glanced back at Rhoda. “Maybe this is just me being the angel.”
“You don’t need to be her any longer.”
“That’s what everyone says,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I need to do things.”
“What about the photography?”
Nikita shook her head from side to side. “So I can take pictures of events that I’ll never have? I don’t think that is giving me much purpose.”
Rhoda pressed her lips together and watched Nikita. She then realized that Nikita did not want to hear anyone. It was her way or no way. Everyone was going to get shot done until Nikita became to realize what she was doing. “I can’t watch this any longer.”
“I didn’t ask you too,” Nikita pointed out as she dropped her head. She worked for a couple minutes and then looked back at Rhoda. She barely saw the look on Rhoda’s face, but she knew that Rhoda was disappointed. But Nikita just wanted to be left alone. “Is that all? I thought you weren’t going to watch this any longer?”
“I’ll go say hello to Mick,” Rhoda rasped as she shook her head from side to side. “Don’t lose all of your friends, Nikita.”
