Nikita knew that she should be in bed, but she had been pushing off her other responsibilities for days now. She turned on her laptop and impatiently waited for it to boot up.
Plus something told her to check on things.
Nikita had learned a long time ago to trust those instincts. It was when she didn’t trust those instincts that she got into trouble – lots of trouble.
It had been a while since Nikita had checked in on this system. She would have done it last week, as she tried to schedule herself to check on this system at least once a month. It was overdue and she knew that it was because she was trying to do Michael’s job and trying to stay away from everyone’s overbearing attempts of helping her.
It was taking forever and Nikita tried to roll her head around and just found pain. She choked back the hiss of pain which only caused her to cough for a few seconds. Nikita turned and unlocked her desk. She pulled out the bottle of Echinacea and was glad that she had some tablets left. She consulted the dosage and swallowed the one herbal pill down.
Nikita locked the drawer again and looked at her computer screen, sensing that without digging deep, something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Nikita quickly moved her fingers and started to look at the data, finding what she was desired to review to be missing. She held back the panic as she started to delve deeper, trying to find the source of what was missing and why.
But she also was feeling her heart race as she knew what was in those files and what was missing. Nikita worked hard, pounding the keys harder as if the harder she pounded the keys, the more likely it was that everything would come back online, but that wasn’t happening.
She pulled out the Bluetooth headset and dialed as she wanted to make sure that someone wasn’t doing something to her system on purpose. Nikita did not think that she had handed over this information to Jason. She hadn’t told anyone about this system.
“Nikita?” Jason inquired and Nikita continued to type. “Have you been trying to hack into my systems?”
“Why? You gave me everything,” Jason countered and Nikita shook her head. “You know that I didn’t give you everything….”
“Well, I haven’t had the need to look for anything more. I’ve been busy with the search for your daughter,” Jason sighed heavily.
Nikita slapped her hand against the table. “I have a whole system gone… just vanished…”
“It could be anything…”
“Like you hacking in? Or Adam? Or someone else? The bad guys out there… or worse,” Nikita rasped as she felt the panic racing.
“What’s in the system?” Jason inquired and Nikita started to type again. “I just sent you access to view my screen.”
“Ah… Nikita… I’m out with Daisy right now.”
“You said that you were busy looking for my daughter,” Nikita snapped as she rubbed her hands thru her hair and stood up. “I need you to look at this.”
“Are you sure that it isn’t anyone in the house? Adam is really good… so is Michael,” Jason suggested. He heard Nikita as she slammed out of the room. “Adam? Adam?”
“Can’t it wait until morning?” Jason called out but Nikita tossed the Bluetooth back into the office as she opened up Adam’s door. Adam rubbed his eyes. “What is it?”
“Have you been hacking my system again?”
“Kita?” Michael called out as he opened up the bedroom door. “What haven’t you come to bed yet?”
“I haven’t hacked your system,” Adam shook his head from side to side as he sat up.
“Really? Or is that just a lie?” Nikita asked as she looked at Adam and then looked at Michael. “Or are you hacking my system?”
“Why would I hack you?” Michael inquired as he rubbed his hand thru his hair. “And Adam knows the ramifications of if he did that.”
“Maybe he thought he wouldn’t get caught? Although my one whole system is gone…” Nikita turned back to the office. Michael looked at Adam and Adam shook his head back and forth. That was enough for Michael to know that Adam was speaking the truth.
Nikita felt tears rolling down her face as she found that it was still missing. “Damn… Damn…”
“What system is missing?” Michael inquired as he walked into the office tentatively.
“I tracked the kids… the 106 children that I got out of Section before I was told to start clearing Section out… the 106 children that Madeline was experimenting on…” Nikita rasped as she leaned forward. “Oh god… what if it is one of those children? Or what if they found out?”
“Kita, Section is gone,” Michael reached out and touched her shoulder. She pulled away and glared at him. “I know that… but I don’t know what Madeline was doing to those children… I tried to figure it out… but her notes were all over the place and some of the time it was like she had those 106 children there just so she could see the innocence of children…”
“So you got them out… adopted?” Michael questioned as his voice cracked.
“Yeah… I did get more done for all of them than what I managed to do for our daughter it appears,” Nikita hissed and Michael made the decision not to comment to that phrase. It was Nikita’s way of trying to pick a fight with Michael so he would walk away from her right now. He wasn’t going to go that path. “So you had to track the children… what’s the age range? And why?”
“There are a couple that aren’t children now… they are probably 21… and then there were just babies... so they would be about seven or eight…” Nikita spoke and pushed her laptop away from her hands. “And I couldn’t be sure that Madeline didn’t plant something in them… that would explode… or suddenly change who they are…. Maybe they were brainwashed or something… so I watch them and I should have been watching them more… I just forgot.”
“Why didn’t you share this with us?” Michael inquired as he sat down in the spare chair next to Nikita’s desk. “We all could have helped.”
“I decided to get them out. That’s my burden to carry,” Nikita announced and Michael exhaled. “It isn’t…”
“Don’t tell me what is and isn’t my burden to carry,” Nikita snapped as she shook her head from side to side. “Now I have a breach…. I’ve been breached… and I should have backed this system up… I mean, it has redundancy were it is located, but I haven’t copied elsewhere…. A tragedy mistake maybe…. Because I’ll have to find them all…”
“You may be able to get things back…”
“I don’t even know if it is safe for me to be on…. I could be having a complete breach… what if others have been able to get into my other systems?” Nikita inquired as she pulled her laptop back to her fingers and she started to run checks.
Davenport knocked at the door and wearily looked at Michael and Nikita. “Jason is on the phone? Said that you had called him?”
Michael realized that he had been watching Nikita for some time. She reached for the phone. “What?”
“You haven’t been hacked… that system is located in Texas, correct?” Jason spoke with a steady voice.
“Yes… it is in Texas, Birkoff,” Nikita answered. Michael winced and shook his head. “It’s Jason, Kita.”
“Ah… there was a tornado in that area…. Small one and didn’t hurt anyone… but it took down the power grid… You can’t get to it without the power… and I’m thinking that your redundant power isn’t on generator either… so as soon as power comes back up,” Jason continued to explain as he just didn’t respond to how Nikita called him. He knew that she was under stress right now.
“Oh thank god… oh thank god… I didn’t lose them,” Nikita whispered as she pulled her hands away from her laptop, feeling exhausted.
“I’m going to watch the system… once it comes up to power… I’ll run diagnostics and I’ll get virtual copy over into our new farm off your systems, ok?” Jason suggested as he just wanted Nikita to calm down. He had run into the nearest internet café from the movie theater, Daisy with him on every step. He swallowed hard and waited.
“That makes a lot of sense.. thank you, Birkoff,” Nikita whispered as she numbly handed the phone back to Michael.
“Kita… it was Jason,” Michael spoke as he handed the phone back to Davenport. Nikita leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes. Tears still coming down her face. Michael stroked at them and then pulled at her shoulders as he stood up. “Come to bed, Kita… ok?”
Nikita looked at the computer. “How many more of my systems can this happen to?” Nikita rasped but she was moving with Michael’s guidance. Michael turned the light off to the office and looked at Adam who was staring at the bed. As soon as Adam got a glance from his father he scurried back to bed.
“You can worry about it in the morning, Kita… ok?”
“I shouldn’t have lost them… I shouldn’t have lost them… they need me…”
“You haven’t lost them,” Michael whispered as they entered the bedroom, still darkened which was fine. Michael got Nikita onto the bed and he wrapped his arms around her even as she still protested that she should be worried about the children. All 106 children.
