Michael was sipping his third cup of coffee as Nikita walked into the kitchen, her head dropped low. He got up and turned the kettle on the stove. “There is some fruity and nutty oatmeal for breakfast.”

“Thanks,” Nikita spoke and Michael went to the stove to reheat what he had made this morning for himself and Adam before Adam went off to school.

After last night, Michael made a short list of things that had to change and he got up early this morning to start making sure that those things happened. “I had some things planned today… if you are up for it.”

Nikita looked at Michael and rubbed her face. “Plans?”

“I was thinking we need to go car shopping since I’ve been cleared by Ellie this morning to return to work. I could have started today but I know that the car situation is important,” Michael explained, simplifying what had happened this morning.

It had actually been a very heated conversation. Ellie was not ready to tell Michael that he could go back to work. Then he declared that he was going to start back to work with or without her permission, calling it going back to work against medical advice, just like he had left the hospital. He had even threatened to allow Nikita to use the car at all times and that he would walk to the lab and back every day. Ellie wanted Michael to rest a bit more but then realized that he wasn’t even really resting right now. She reluctantly relented and gave her blessing to Michael.

But Michael was going to owe her one.

“A car?” Nikita inquired and Michael nodded his head up and down. “So you can start working with Whitney tomorrow also. It will be like the first day of school for us as we both go to work.”

Michael placed the oatmeal into a bowl, not giving Nikita too much, and placed it on the table while snagging a spoon. “Let me know if you want more.”

This was another plan that Michael told them all that he was starting. Everyone was giving Nikita huge servings of food as they tried to get her to eat more. Maybe that was wrong. It was likely that there was so much food that it overwhelmed Nikita. She didn’t have success in eating enough because there was too much to start with. He cut the portion by a third and hoped that Nikita would ask for more. Then everyone could build off of successes.

Nikita took a bite and smiled. “This is really good.”

“Thanks,” Michael turned to prepare Nikita’s cup of tea. “Maybe if we find a car quickly… we can do something fun this afternoon.”

Of course Michael also knew that they should be able to find the car that Nikita wanted right away because Walter had confirmed that the dealership that was close to the house actually had ten Ford Escapes on the lot, five of them were hybrids as Michael knew that Nikita was interested in. Unless her mind was changed or if she wanted some odd color, she would be the owner of the new car by noon today.

This led to the next part of his statement. Having some fun. Their lives had been so serious of late that he didn’t remember the last time that he had time with Nikita outside of the house. It had to be the cabin at Christmas, and that wasn’t really considered time outside of the house in Michael’s mind. They still needed to do things like go to dinner and go the movies together because they needed that in their lives.

They needed to date.

Nikita didn’t have that opportunity in her life and Michael was going to give that to her now, even if he couldn’t call it a date. If he had to call it having fun, then he was all for it.

And there was a distinction in Michael’s mind of what he meant by the phrase having fun. Some, like Walter, would take it as sex, which was fun, but it was not what Michael meant. For the record, sex was still something that Ellie was unyielding that Michael refrained from for at least one more week, if not two. Michael knew that sex wasn’t a probably between them, but also realized that sex could be used to hide the things that were wrong.

“Maybe… car shopping might take some time,” Nikita spoke as the kettle started to whistle. Michael made the cup of tea and was soon sitting across from Nikita as the tea steeped. “I started a joint account for us… and we won’t have to worry about financing the car.”

“Why are you doing that?”

“Because we should have some surface semblance of having a joint account…. For the sake of appearances,” Michael explained as he handed over the checkbook. He didn’t want to tell Nikita how many things he had to do to pull this one off, but it was done and there would be no problem with getting the car today. “So, I’m thinking a comedy.”

Nikita held the checkbook and nodded her head up and down. Michael looked at the bowl and suppressed his grin. “You’re done. Do you want more oatmeal?”

“Yeah,” Nikita nodded her head up and down as she was surprised to hear that she was actually done. She didn’t even think that she had that much to eat.

Michael got the next serving and handed it back to Nikita. “I also wanted to tell you about a small office that I have in Vancouver… I think every morning when we have breakfast together, we should admit to each other about one of the locations we have property or resources…”

Michael hoped that this wasn’t going to cause Nikita to back away. It was a risk and he waited. “It’s in the warehouse district… I have a computer there… basically to connect me to other resources… it holds backup clothing and identifications for myself and Adam… I was thinking I should probably get up there sometime and make sure that you are covered… along with most of the others.”

“Michael… I know that I should have told you about that system… and the children…” Nikita rushed out and Michael reached over and placed three fingers over her mouth. “I have no right to be upset about that unless I have disclosed everything… and I haven’t… so we are even.”

Michael saw Nikita processing what he was saying and he had hope.

Hope that he was on the right track.
