Michael pulled the folder together as he put the last papers into the report. He hated to admit it, but it had been nice coming back into the lab and having things very organized. He hadn’t realized how organized Nikita tended to be until he came back to the lab and found all of the pending cases in order in various file drawers based upon status, critical need, and other factors. All of the cases that had Nat has a contact person were actually in its own dedicated file cabinet and that was nice as Michael wouldn’t admit it, but Nat did get priority work.

That organization, plus a new sheet inside of each folder, that indicated all the various steps that needed to be done, along with an additional sheet that could list things that were outside the standard tests, streamlined the work so well that Michael was caught up.

It hadn’t taken long at all. In fact, he had been spending time writing up reports and edited them before sending them off. That was something that Michael couldn’t remember the last time that he had the time to actually edit and critic his report. It had even garnered comments from Nat who found the reports easier to understand.

Again, something that Nikita had tweaked.

The first part of the report got to the point and outlined the results. Then the results were explained in laymen’s terms. The last section had all of the scientific terminology that another expert in the field may be interested in. She had template the system and had started to build out a front end that allowed Michael to start the report in a website kind of format and it started to plug in the various information from his various different systems into place, so he didn’t have to cut and pace – or worse, retype – information.

She hadn’t finished the system and Michael was afraid to ask for her help to finish it. It had to have been what she was working on when Rhoda had her discussion with Nikita that made Nikita pull completely away.

But Michael thought it was a good change.

Nikita had gotten a blue Ford Escape Hybrid that day, using the first check from their joint account to purchase the whole car right there. She was using the car to drive to Whitney’s studio. Since she started doing that Michael estimated that half the days was spent taking photographs with Whitney and the other half of the days Nikita was doing some sort of paperwork or cataloguing. Seeing his lab, he was sure that Whitney had no idea what a bargain she was going to get with Nikita organizing things.

It all seemed on the surface to be much better, but there was time still unaccounted for Nikita but Michael did not push it. If she was up to something else, that was fine for Michael right now. He didn’t think that it was the angel and he didn’t think it was just about the search for their daughter. Nikita had apparently turned most of that search over to Jason and she readily updated Michael when she did spend time with Jason working on it. They were struggling with agents that had gone off-grid and Michael knew how hard that could be to work thru. There had been some talk about having to go to the middle of Montana if they couldn’t get a lead on the one agent.

Michael wasn’t sure who would go.

There was a knock at the door and Michael looked at the folder and smiled. He had just called Nat to tell him that another case was finished. He had gotten voicemail but it was a lot like Nat to just show up instead of calling ahead of time. Michael got up and opened the door but stepped back as Walter stood there. “I thought you were going to spend more time up at the cabin.”

“I’ve been gone for four days,” Walter pointed a finger at Michael as he stepped into the house and looked outside. “Can you believe that snow is melting so fast?”

“Just in time for Valentine’s Day,” Michael commented and Walter rolled his eyes. “I don’t like it one bit… we could get another blizzard.”

“We could,” Michael nodded his head although he had looked at the weather modules and didn’t see it happening. “What are you doing here?”

“I was stopping by to see if I needed to take Adam off of your hands for the Holiday.”

“It’s a school night,” Michael answered and Walter shrugged his shoulders. “Do you need him out of the house?”

“I don’t think that it will be necessary,” Michael shook his head from side to side. Walter frowned and shook his head. “It should be necessary. It’s freaking Valentine’s Day. You do know what that holiday is meant to be, right?”

“That isn’t the focus of my relationship-“

“You two haven’t been having sex? I thought you got the all clear?” Walter demanded and Michael pressed his lips together and swallowed back his first reaction. He waited and walked back into the main area of the lab. “I’m not discussing this with you, Walter.”

“Oh, this is more than not having sex with Nikita… that means that things aren’t all the way better. You two should have been begging me to take Adam away the day that you got cleared by Ellie…” Walter continued to push the issue. Michael looked up at the ceiling as he again held back his first response.

“Walter, I’m not discussing this with you.”

“You got to plan on making love to her on Valentine’s Day. She’ll be really upset if you don’t do that with her… I just don’t get you two… one movement it’s like you both can’t get enough of each other and other days… it’s like you exist together,” Walter shook his head as he flipped a chair around and stared at Michael. “Something is still wrong.”

“Nikita is still…” Michael paused as he thought for the word and then swallowed. “She is still transitioning into this life, Walter.”

“And that stops you from having…”

“Stop with the sex,” Michael’s voice snapped loudly. Walter waited and Michael cleared his throat. “I won’t give you any details about what is or isn’t happening. That is between Kita and me.”

Walter rolled his eyes but he also knew that Michael was shutting down this line of the conversation entirely. He frowned before huffing and puffing for a bit. “Maybe I should still take Adam away…”

“We have nothing special planned…”

“You two have been doing dates once or twice a week... during the day… and you have nothing planned for Valentine’s Day?”

“Nikita’s request,” Michael admitted as tapped his hands on his legs. “I’m respecting that.”

“You are getting her a gift…”

“I think she is happy with the car…”

“Oh, that car cannot be her Valentine’s gift. You should have never told her no to the car to the start with,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “Jewelry?”

“She has the mother’s necklace…. And she doesn’t seem to really like much more than that.”

“An engagement ring?” Walter prodded. Michael tilted his head to the side and blinked his eyes. He did not even need to say the words. Walter lifted his hands and groaned. “Ok… so no engagement ring.”

Michael knew that Walter wanted to hear something and Michael rubbed his hand with his neck. “Whitney has a few prints of photos that Nikita has taken recently…. I’m going to look over them because Whitney is excited about them. She said that she has a friend that can get one framed up quickly… I think that’s what I’m going to do.”

“A picture?” Walter rolled his eyes with a groan. “How is that special?”

“It’s something that Nikita took,” Michael pointed out as he glanced at his watch while his phone vibrated with a text message. He grabbed it and saw that Nat was on his way over. “Walter, she still is not talking about much…. I’m taking it slow… I’m getting somewhere… but she is still hiding a lot.”

“I would say so,” Walter stood up as he shook his head. “Do you think she is afraid that if she has sex with you that she might get pregnant again and that it would be a way to forget the daughter that is out there?”

“I’m not going to speculated on my sex life with Nikita with anyone else but with Nikita,” Michael warned as he stood up. “You could have called to harass me rather than drive down here.”

“I’m going to harass more than just you… Mick just isn’t home right now,” Walter shrugged his shoulders as he looked up to the ceiling. Michael smirked. “He is out with Helen.”

Walter stopped and the surprise was clearly on his face. “He is still with her?”

“And taking it slow,” Michael nodded his head up and down as he knew that it was not what anyone thought about when they thought about Mick Schtoppel. Just the other day Mick had told Michael that he had to thank Nikita for teaching him to slow down and wait for what was right. It was Nikita’s influence that had him going slow with Helen.

“Damn,” Walter shook his head back and forth. “What else don’t I know?”

“Nikita is damn good with computers,” Michael stated as he thought back to the work that she had started on his computers. Walter snorted. “Ah… I think I knew that… how many of you have been trying to hack into her systems?”

“Hopefully no one right now,” Michael warned as he looked at Walter. “But seriously… Madeline and Operations never gave her much credit… but she is damn good… and she has been able to translate those skills to something that isn’t sort of related to Section…. A strength.”

“We all do a lot of things close to Section, Michael,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “You are crime fighting behind the veil of science. Jason is doing ethical hacking.”

“And you are an adoptive grandparent?” Michael chimed in to stop Walter’s long speech. Walter smirked and shrugged his shoulders. “I had to be a parent to you and my Sugar… I might as well be a grandparent in my old age.”
