Nikita turned her head slowly as she continued to sleep. Ellie was satisfied now that she was upstairs in the bedroom and the fact that the oxygen was no longer needed. It had been a touchy 24-hour period, but things were turning around from the extreme that they were at quickly.

Not that Nikita was going to be better right away.

She had stopped administering the fast acting medicine as soon as the acute state that should have had required Nikita to be in the hospital had passed. She knew that it probably wasn’t a decision that most would agree with, but she remembered clearly that when Nikita’s collar bone was fixed fast, it didn’t lead to huge breakthrough with what was going on with her.

Maybe she did need to struggle with the recovery of illness to simply get it.

“Are you keeping her asleep?” Michael questioned as he moved into the bedroom, exhausted despite her attempts to tell Michael that he needed to rest also. She didn’t blame Michael for not listening to that when it was touch and go, but now he needed to listen to her or he would miss this opportunity.

“I’m not keeping her asleep. Her illness is keeping her asleep for now,” Ellie answered as she folded her hands in front of her stomach. “She is getting better… but it is going to take time.”

“I didn’t take time.”

“You had a lot of internal capabilities that Nikita clearly doesn’t have,” Ellie shrugged her shoulders lightly as she knew that it sounded harsh.

“How can you say that? Do you have any idea what she has lived thru to do the great things she has done?” Michael shook his head back and forth as his voice was cracking with tiredness. “You wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her.”

“I know that,” Ellie replied as she took a deep breath while closing her eyes. “That’s why I’m telling you that you need to get in that bed… and sleep beside her… and that’s why we can’t let her get physically better without fixing the other stuff.”

Michael sat on the edge of the bed and reached over and stroked Nikita’s hair back. “I don’t know how to fix that stuff. It isn’t just about our daughter.”

“It’s about her,” Ellie stressed and Michael shook his head.

“I’d agree with her,” Walter spoke from the doorway. He saw Michael’s eyes and raised his hands. “I was just stopping up to let you know that I was leaving… to go back the grandfather thing again.”

Michael blinked his eyes and rubbed his face. “You told me that you weren’t going to leave… until you saw your Sugar back up on her own two feet.”

“Tom called me… the boys are missing me…” Walter shoved his hands into his pocket as he glanced at Nikita. He looked at Ellie and then back to Michael. “Maybe Tom might have an idea.”

Michael shook his head as he rolled his shoulders back. “Nikita would hate us talking to him… she barely tolerates his existence…”

“He is a symbol of what she ultimately had to do to some people, Michael,” Walter rasped as he stepped back. “But I think… we should explore all options.”

“What could he know? That Nikita got someone out who could help her? It’s not likely that Nikita saved someone like Madeline,” Michael hissed as he shook his head back and forth. Walter nodded his head and swallowed. He could take what Michael was dishing right now. He had been since he arrived. Michael was upset at himself for not catching this sooner and was taking it out on others. But Walter was ok with that for right now. “He may be far enough from this to have a new idea… but then, I always think you are the best medicine for her.”

“You aren’t going to hurt her if you sleep in bed with her,” Ellie confirmed again as she tilted her head. Michael looked at Nikita and then to the two looking at him. “Fine!”

“I’ll be downstairs if she needs me… but sleep is what she needs right now…” Ellie started to leave and then paused. “And she needs you.”
