Michael walked back into the house and was glad that he had worked a few hours at the lab. Mick had accepted a couple packages for cases that Michael had taken on and the samples almost were handled improperly. Michael was going to have to get Mick some further training, but probably after the holidays.
But he also had the need to be around Nikita a lot today. They had a late brunch so he was not surprised to see Nikita eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as she was starting some sort of stew or soup for dinner. He pressed a kiss to her cheek and Nikita handed over half of her sandwich. Michael shook his head but his stomach betrayed him and she pushed it until Michael finally took a bite.
Nikita moved to the refrigerator and quickly poured a glass of milk and extended it to Michael. “It will do your body good.”
“Har-har-har,” Michael rolled his eyes slightly as he took the glass and swallowed some quickly. He looked into the pot and then to Nikita. “Stew?”
“Yeah,” Nikita nodded her head up and down. She looked at Michael and leaned against the counter. “I need to talk to you.”
Michael exhaled as he had hoped that she wouldn’t have any flashes while he was gone. He had asked her to come along but Nikita said that she wasn’t ready for that.
“Not like you are worried about,” Nikita stated as she grabbed the lid and placed it over the pot. “We can talk in the living room… so we can be sure when Adam comes on.”
Michael followed Nikita as he didn’t understand why it was important to know when Adam was home. Nikita settled on the couch and she patted the couch to indicate that she wanted Michael close by. He settled down and Nikita curled up near him. “I was thinking of a couple gifts that I wanted to buy Adam for Christmas….”
“Why do we have to talk about this?” Michael asked as she looked at Nikita. Nikita rubbed at her legs and turned to look at Michael. “I think I want to buy him… no, I want us to buy him…” Nikita started and corrected herself. “A puppy.”
“No,” Michael replied back as he shook his head. “That’s not a good idea.”
“I think it is,” Nikita countered as she pulled her feet up and Michael touched them. They were freezing. “Where are your socks?”
“You aren’t changing the subject,” Nikita wagged her finger at Michael. “Adam wants a dog so badly and he hasn’t asked you.”
“It isn’t smart, Kita.”
“It’s a sign that this is permanent, Michael,” Nikita explained as she sat there, not giving into Michael’s statement.
“What?”
Nikita tilted her head to the side. “I get why I couldn’t have a cat… I get it. But Adam is a child and you probably told him for a couple years when he asked for a dog that it was too dangerous to get one in case you had a to move at the last minute… that the emotional attachment to an animal could distract if a quick change needed to happen.”
Michael blinked his eyes. Those were practically the words that Michael had used verbatim. “Kita… we think we are safe.”
“Safer than ever before,” Nikita nodded her head. “And getting Adam a dog will prove to him that even more. He has to be concerned that with more of us around now… with me around…”
“No,” Michael shook his head. “I talked to Adam about your presence before I started to look for you. We both agreed that we were better with you… than without knowing where you were… you aren’t seen as a liability at all, Kita.”
“Then get Adam a dog with me,” Nikita countered as she leaned into Michael and placed her head on Michael’s shoulder. “You are always concerned that he is spending so much time in front of a computer… and if we make him go to some training classes with the dog…. Plan on the puppy training, the companion dog training… maybe some agility training… We can get Adam to live more than in front of the computer that you are concerned about… and give him something else in common with the other boys his age.”
Michael felt himself melting because Nikita’s reasoning was strong. He had to always tell Adam they couldn’t risk having a dog to the point that he even stopped asking. For Nikita to know that Adam wanted a dog was pretty impressive. It meant that Adam had a good relationship with Nikita. Plus Nikita stopped to ask him about the gift. She could have gone out and just bought the dog for Adam, but she was asking Michael to buy it with her.
“Kita… I don’t want a purebred,” Michael finally caved as he smiled at Nikita. Nikita smiled and laughed. “I know the perfect Shelter that has lots of puppies… and you want a puppy because they can be the best companion for a boy when they grow up with the boy.”
“You are going to have to take care of it if Adam gets bored,” Michael warned and Nikita didn’t even flinch. He waited and turned more towards Nikita. “You said a couple gifts…”
“I want to get him a baseball glove and bat… you know, so he can play ball,” Nikita nodded her head. Michael closed his eyes. “Kita… most boys have been playing for years already… it’s not meant for Adam.”
“Because it was too scary,” Nikita stated as she firmly looked at Michael. “He is a good athlete, Michael. I’m sure that with some help, he can pick up the game easily. Plus he plays a virtual version of the game online every night. He has an interest in the game already.”
Michael didn’t know that about Adam. He swallowed hard. “Kita…”
“You want him to be a normal boy. While it’s good that he can defend himself with all of the martial arts you taught him… that isn’t getting him out with other children his age,” Nikita explained easily the argument that was going to make Michael agree to her idea. He waited a long time and Nikita started to clap her hands. “You are good at this, Kita.”
“I am just trying to give your son the opportunities that you want him to have… and to help get him out of the house all the time,” Nikita explained and Michael arched an eyebrow. “So we have time…”
“Not for that,” Nikita swatted at Michael’s arm. “But because you want what is best for him. It’s ok for him to be out there with this stuff now.”
Michael exhaled and he nodded his head. “Ok, Kita… you can get Adam stuff for baseball.”
Nikita was happy and Michael grabbed her feet. “Now… am I going to have to buy you socks for Christmas?”
