“What movie do you want to see tonight?” Nat asked Rhoda as they walked down the sidewalk after having a romantic Italian dinner on this Friday evening. It was a rare Friday night off and Nat was happy that he was able to spend it with Rhoda.
“Whatever one you want,” Rhoda smiled back as she took Nat’s hand in hers and squeezed it. They walked in the light snow with the stores packed at the gills. Rhoda had finished her shopping already and she was relieved to know that she only had a thing or two left to get for Nat.
“I asked first,” Nat shook his head slightly. But before he could protest more, his cell phone rang. He groaned and shook his head. “They know that I’m off.”
“Just answer it,” Rhoda gently replied as she pulled her hand again and shoved it into her coat pocket. Nat pulled the phone up and frowned as he saw the caller ID. “Lisa?”
Rhoda felt her stomach clench as she had never heard about a Lisa. She wondered for a split second who this woman was before she heard Nat’s voice change and his body stance tensed. “Lisa… you need to calm down and tell me what is going on.”
Nat moved to the side and against a brick wall of one of the stores as his eyes darted out to the street. “You have to call the police, Lisa…”
“I don’t care what they told you to do, Lisa. This is too important,” Nat spoke as he reached out for Rhoda’s hand and turned around. He was walking fast and Rhoda struggled to keep up. “I know that you don’t trust those men, Lisa. But this is too important. Ben would want you to call this in.”
Nat reached a street and lifted his hand to get them across the street. He pulled out his keys and opened up the car quickly. Rhoda got in as Nat seemed to turn the car on in the save moment that he was getting into the car. “Lisa… I’m on my way… but the best thing to do is to call the authorities… maybe we can bypass my office and go right to the FBI.”
Rhoda looked at Nat with worry and she watched as Nat pulled out into traffic and barely avoided an accident. But then he pulled out his dashboard bubble light and turned on the sirens. “I’m coming in hot, Lisa… I need to get there…”
“Yes, I’m running the siren!”
Rhoda waited and Nat groaned. “I’ll turn it off before I get to your house… Is Bobby there?”
“Damn it,” Nat hissed as he dropped the phone into the cup holder. “I’m sorry about this, Rhoda.”
“What’s going on?” Rhoda inquired as Nat got through the intersection quickly. He didn’t answer for some time. “Lisa is the widow of my partner from four years ago. Her husband, Manny, was killed while he was doing a job undercover… and it was going to be his last undercover job…”
Rhoda gasped and sighed. “I didn’t know this…”
“Lisa had just given birth to Veronica… and at first everyone on the force thought that Manny was dirty… it took a long time to clear his name… and it made Lisa had almost everyone on the force… except me,” Nat continued to explain as he almost crashed into a car that had not moved out of his way. He turned a corner and then slowed down. He turned off the siren and put down the light. “She was carjacked… and Veronica was taken.”
“Taken!?!”
“Kidnapped… because the case has come up again… the man who killed Manny keeps on getting new trials… and they want Lisa to lie… on the stand…” Nat shook his head as he looked ahead and groaned. “She doesn’t deserve this… and she is afraid to use to the police because they said that they would know.”
“But you are the police,” Rhoda pointed out and Nat frowned. “It was my personal cell phone… they won’t know… there hasn’t been a 911 call.”
“And who is Bobby?”
“Their son… who Manny who had been going to his first ballgame when it all happened…. Bobby is now about thirteen… he just started to get back to being a kid again,” Nat pulled up to a house and saw that all of the lights were on. “I should have taken you home.”
“She is going to need more than just you,” Rhoda replied as she looked at the house. Nat looked at the house and hoped that he was going to be able to protect this family. “I should have done the undercover assignment…. I wasn’t myself.”
“That’s when I became Mother Superior…” Rhoda whispered and Nat didn’t look at her. He got out of the car and slammed the door. “They shouldn’t be messing with this family… not now.”
