Davenport walked into the house and saw the book bag down on the floor. He then looked towards the kitchen where he saw Nikita walking. He dropped his suitcase and walked down the hallway. “Was there a half day today?”

Nikita turned and there were tears rolling down her face. “What’s wrong, Nikita?”

“I need… more,” Nikita spoke as she looked towards the table where she had brought down the bottle. She had attempted to figure out if she could try to make some more with stuff in the house. She knew that it helped her calm down and she needed her mind to turn off so she could focus on Adam.

“Ah… I’m sure that Dr. Hlad will call in a refill,” Davenport spoke as he reached out to Nikita and rubbed her arms. “What’s going on Nikita?”

“Hey, sweetness,” Walter smiled at Nikita. She was cold as she looked at Walter. “What are they doing to me, Walter?”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know what’s happening to me,” Nikita admitted with a dull voice that only seemed to show how scared she was. Walter stared at her and blinked his eyes. “Huh?”

“Karl disgusts me,” Nikita explained as she felt her heart racing. Her mind couldn’t figure out what was going on. “He’s as despicable a person as I’ve ever met, and I’m falling in love with him.”

“In love?” Walter was stunned and knew that it couldn’t be right.

“I can’t help myself. I’ve got no control over my feelings,” Nikita’s voice cracked as she moved in slightly closer to Walter, afraid of anyone being nearby.

“When did you start noticing this?” Walter asked but Nikita didn’t have an answer. He sighed and tried another question. “Your cover procedure… anything out of the ordinary?”

“No,” Nikita replied but didn’t move. His questions weren’t helping her feel any better. “How did you prep the mission?”

“The usual way,” Nikita spoke almost annoyed thinking that this was getting her no more answers. “Michael gave me some supplementary profiles. Our eyes only.”

Walter knew that he had to do something to help Nikita out. “Let’s go take a look,” Walter spoke as he took the disk from Nikita. He started to play it and jerked his head. “Oh, what’s this?”

“What?”

“Drop frame,” Walter explained and then pointed. “There.”

“No target,” Nikita was confused with what Walter was pointing out. “Look again.”

“Am I missing something, Walter?” Nikita inquired as she had a growing headache. Walter looked straight at Nikita, knowing that she needed to hear the truth and he couldn’t just sugar coat that. “You’re not going out of your mind; you’re being conditioned. They’ve all been adjusted.”

“I don’t see anything.”

“Look at the irregularities in the skin tone. They’ve been airbrushed. Relax. Focus on the face,” Walter directed Nikita, knowing that she had to see this for herself. “Okay, what am I looking for?”

“Look for differences in texture,” Walter directed her. “Now watch while I adjust the contrast.”

Nikita lurched forward as the image morphed and who was there was someone she knew very well. “My God, it’s Michael! You mean that all this is happening by watching these DVD’s?”

“Partly,” Walter admitted as he pulled the DVD out and sprayed some chemical on it. He turned it to face Nikita. “See that? Fingerprints. They’ve treated it with a chemical agent. You took it in through your skin. It primed your system.”

“For what?” Nikita hurried her question as she was unsure she wanted to hear the answer.

“Your assignment hinged on Karl believing that you loved him. Now, they knew that you couldn’t do that, so they directed your emotions, using someone that you cared about.”

“Nikita?” Davenport called out as he shook her slightly. “Ok… that was a PTSD flash...”

There was a knock at the door and Nikita pulled away from Davenport. She opened the door and Davenport felt relieved. “Hi Dr. Hlad.”

“Adam is upstairs… I think I heard him up. He might be still throwing up,” Nikita spoke as she stepped away from the door. Davenport looked at Nikita. “Adam is sick?”

“I had to get him from school,” Nikita explained and Ellie forced a smile as she looked at Davenport. “Any luck in getting in touch with Michael?”

“No reason to bother him… I… I can handle this… He trusts me to care for Adam…” Nikita replied. Ellie turned before going up the stairs. “You look really upset, Nikita.”

“She just had a flash…”

“I did not!” Nikita hissed as she glared at Davenport. “But I need a refill.”

Ellie felt her stomach bottom out. Nikita had to need the Ativan pretty frequently if she already needed a refill. “Didn’t you just take a pill?”

“What?” Davenport inquired and Nikita pushed her hands together. “Worry about Adam first.”

“I don’t think he is as acute as you are right now,” Ellie spoke but Nikita turned and walked down the hallway. She took a step towards the second floor but Davenport roughly stopped her. “She had a flash.”

“I don’t doubt that. I’m sure that she had at least one when she called me,” Ellie whispered as she looked down the hallway. “You should get her to sit down… and find out where Michael is. She hasn’t been able to get in touch with him.”

“He left his cell phone here. He has a phone in his lab. Crap, he is like three blocks away tops,” Davenport shook his head. “And if she took a pill… shouldn’t she be sleeping?”

“Get her to sit down, Davenport. Get Michael,” Ellie directed the man as she took a couple more steps up the stairs. She then stopped to turn to look at the horrified Davenport. “I want to be sure that this is the flu with Adam… but he is also smart. He may know exactly when he got home… and when Nikita took the medicine…”

Ellie rushed up the stairs to find Adam sitting on the edge of the bed. He looked like he was running a decent fever and Nikita had been correct about him recently being sick. “I have the flu.”

“I kind of agree,” Ellie nodded her head up and down.

“Then go back to Nikita,” Adam directed the doctor. Ellie pulled out her stethoscope and whirled it around at Adam. “She is really worried about you.”

“I think she is worried that my dad will blame her for me being sick. I didn’t feel good this morning but I wanted to take my test,” Adam leaned forward so Ellie could listen to his chest. He took some deep breathes and then looked at Ellie. “She practically ran for the bathroom when we got home… and she got really upset.”

“How long ago?” Ellie inquired.

“No more than ninety minutes,” Adam replied as he blinked his eyes. Ellie ruffled his hair. “You are right… I think this is the flu and that you should try to sleep some.”

“Nah… not with…” Adam started to argue and Ellie tilted her head to the side. Adam relented and crawled underneath the blankets again. “Please help her.”

“I’m going to do my best, Adam.”
