Nikita walked into the kitchen and Michael turned his head. “Good morning, Kita.”

“Morning,” Nikita answered as she nodded her head. Michael handed over a cup of tea and Nikita walked to the table. Michael cracked a couple eggs into the pan and watched as Nikita exhaled while sitting down. “I called Tom. He is busy this morning. He is going to try to come over this afternoon.”

“I hate waiting,” Nikita admitted as she looked at Michael. He knew that she was struggling in her effort to communicate. She had years and years to hold everything inside and it was going to be a process. Just as it had been a process for Michael to communicate with Adam. The difference was that Adam was growing up as Michael was learning how to communicate.

“I don’t know his relationship to organizations… and why he is your handler… but he has another whole life,” Michael reminded Nikita as he pulled a plate out from the cupboard and quickly was serving the eggs to Nikita. Michael refilled his coffee mug and walked to the table. Nikita looked at Michael with her fork in mid-air. “I ate with Adam this morning.”

“You should have woke me,” Nikita weakly commented because she knew that she did enjoy the sleep that she had gotten. Michael merely smiled and sipped his coffee. Nikita ate silently and about half way stopped. “You don’t need to watch me eat.”

“I just really like hearing you talk,” Michael admitted as he smiled at Nikita. “I know that I used to complain about how you talked too much at times. But I don’t like the silence at all. I didn’t like it back then and I really don’t like it now.”

“And you talk a lot,” Nikita pointed out with a slight sparkle in her eyes. It was then that Michael realized how lucky Nikita was. She had healed quickly from the beaten that she had taken and she was actually looking like she was slightly gaining healthy weight. She still had circles underneath her eyes, but they weren’t as pronounce as before.

Michael settled his mug down and stood up. “Wait here… I have something…”

Nikita picked up the fork and placed it back down. She was done with her tea and Nikita got a glass of orange juice and was sitting down when Michael arrived with a bag in his hand. “I got you something.”

“You don’t need to get me things, Michael,” Nikita shook her head and Michael placed the bag in Nikita’s lap. “I know. But I want to get you things.”

“Remember the first gift?” Nikita rasped and Michael shook his head. “That wasn’t a gift, Kita.”

Nikita nodded her head as she touched the bag. “You have given me so much… that you didn’t need to do.”

“When Rhoda brought over your things… I couldn’t believe the lack of items that there were,” Michael commented as he looked at Nikita as he settled back in his chair and watched Nikita. “And I don’t want you to go back to that condo…”

Nikita’s eyes diverted. “I was still… running missions…”

“I don’t know how you could function there…”

“I… I don’t think… I was functioning,” Nikita rasped as she looked back at Michael. “There are some things…”

“The box,” Michael stated and Nikita nodded her head up and down. She touched the wide ribbon bow and pulled it off as Michael was waiting. Nikita pulled out the tissue paper before pulling out a blue pair of running pants and a bright pink running shirt. Nikita tilted her head to the side as she looked at Michael.

“The weather isn’t going to stay nice forever… the leaves are just starting to change… and the one good thing that came from the convent were your running shoes,” Michael explained his decision. Nikita shook her head. “They were cross-training.”

“You must have been training for… those missions,” Michael stated and Nikita nodded her head up and down while she folded the clothes onto the table beside her. “And maybe we can go for a run this morning. There is a nice trail that isn’t far from here….”

“It starts three blocks over and back one,” Nikita spouted out the information as if she was a computer, but it was just the way that her mind sometimes worked. Nikita blushed as she shrugged her shoulders. “I noticed it.”

“I thought you would,” Michael nodded his head up and down. He leaned over the table. “You are thinking about Tom… and the hours are going to drag on and on… We both have spent too much time in the house. We should get out in the sun. We are allowed to do things like this now…. Together.”

Nikita touched the fabric even as her head started to slightly bounce up and down. Nikita looked at Michael and smiled so broadly. It was the closest to the Nikita that he knew and loved sitting across from him. “I’d like to take a run with you, Michael. But no racing.”

“No racing,” Michael agreed as he took Nikita’s hand. He kissed it and placed it back down. “Finish your eggs…”

“We aren’t racing,” Nikita commented and Michael waited.

And Nikita finished the eggs.
