“Dad? Nikita?” Adam called out as he walked into the house. He dropped his book bag and dashed off towards the lab to find it empty. He stopped, picked up an apple, and then went upstairs, calling out “Dad? Nikita” a couple more times before Michael walked out of his room and stopped Adam.

“Why don’t you go downstairs?” Michael suggested as he looked at Adam. Adam shook his head as he frowned looked at his dad. “Did you just get a shower?”

“Adam… not now,” Michael whispered gently.

“Tell him the truth, Michael,” Nikita’s voice came from inside the bedroom. Michael rocked back on his heels and Adam’s face lit up. “You two have spent the afternoon together?”

“Not like you are thinking right now… and you shouldn’t be thinking like you are thinking… you are too young!” Michael commanded but his son was slippery and used Michael’s shock in Nikita’s voice and what Adam was thinking to slide around his father. Once into the room, Adam stopped as saw Nikita. “What’s going on?”

“I had a hard time after a run,” Nikita rasped as she propped up her tired head. “I had really bad cramps that your dad had to help me with.”

“You are to drink a lot of water,” Adam commented and Nikita cracked a smile. “I did… that wasn’t the problem.”

“That’s why I have bananas on my Chex in the morning,” Adam declared and Nikita smiled again. “Adam… I’m fine now… but I’m just really tired and I think your dad is too.”

“I don’t need you both to be full of energy to talk to you,” Adam turned to look at his dad. Michael stood in the doorway and then finally leaned against it. “You have something to talk about, Adam?”

“Yes,” Adam nodded his head. “Actually several things. The first thing is that my history test was easy. I’m sure that I aced it.”

“That’s good,” Michael stated as he looked at his son. He had no doubt that Adam had done well on the test. Adam smiled. “And my English essay was picked as one of the best in the school… it was about what my father does.”

Nikita glanced at Michael as she saw Michael’s green eyes turn to steel gray. For a moment, Michael was concerned that Adam had written about Michael’s life as a spy. Adam chuckled as he saw the reaction too. “I wrote about how you are a scientist…. And the cool lab you have. They want you to come and talk to the whole school, dad!”

“That’s not a good idea right now, Adam,” Michael shook his head from side to side.

“Your son is proud of you,” Nikita whispered from the bed. Michael looked at Nikita there was sadness in her eyes. Michael moved towards the bed and sat down beside Nikita. “I know that. And I’m proud of my son. But it’s not my focus right now… and I don’t particularly care to talk in front of crowds.”

“It’s just my school, dad,” Adam rolled his eyes as if it was nothing. Michael chewed his lip slightly and shook his head. “It’s the timing, Adam.”

“It’s just for an hour on Friday!”

“In two days?” Michael questioned and Adam nodded his head up and down. “And you already said yes.”

Michael tilted his head. “Adam… what did you do?”

“You hadn’t responded to the email, dad. You have been neglecting some things outside of work… so I responded for you… last week,” Adam shrugged his shoulders slightly. Michael exhaled as he swallowed hard. Nikita touched his hand. “I can go to Florida alone.”

“You aren’t going to Florida alone,” Michael shook his head as he looked down at Nikita. “The school thing can wait.”

“We are going to Florida?” Adam asked as he bounced on his feet. “Disney?”

“You aren’t going,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “It isn’t going to be a trip for fun.”

“Why not?” Adam inquired and Michael stopped for a moment. He turned and looked at Nikita. “We aren’t going on Friday.”

“Tom will have my identification.”

“We have to figure out what happened today, Kita,” Michael pointed out as he rubbed Nikita’s arm. “You aren’t going to feel like it either… we have heating pads still on your calves.”

“I can live with it, Michael,” Nikita declared and Michael shook his head. “No… you are seeing a doctor.”

“Can we get back to the school assembly?” Adam inquired as he waved his hands out in front of Michael. Michael looked at his son. “Adam, its bad timing… and I didn’t say yes.”

“But they think you did,” Adam shrugged his shoulders slightly. “Plus… you’ll see the other thing that I’m excited about…”

“There is more? What did you do? Agree to have Walter come down and talk about guns?” Michael snorted as he felt a growing headache.

“No,” Adam huffed. “I made the soccer team and they are announcing us in the assembly.”

Adam rushed out of the room, clearly upset at his father. He had good news to tell him and it didn’t matter to Michael. Michael slumped as Nikita pushed her body up in bed. Michael turned and tried to push her back down. Nikita stopped him. “You need to go to him… he was so happy about the soccer team.”

“That I didn’t even know about,” Michael sighed as he looked at Nikita. “You aren’t ready to get up, Kita… You need to rest.”

“And you need to go to your son,” Nikita sighed as she looked at Michael. She would go to Adam too. Nikita knew that if she hadn’t come into their lives, Adam probably wouldn’t have broken into Michael’s email and wouldn’t have lied to get his father to go to the school. Michael would have just done the assembly because it was what Adam would have wanted. Now she was throwing that balance off.

“Don’t, Kita,” Michael moved his head slightly from side to side. “You haven’t changed anything in my relationship with my son… he is a spitfire… and stubborn… and a lot like you!”

Nikita frowned and Michael sighed. “He is great, Kita. But he is really smart and he would have done this with or without you here. He knows that I would not want to speak at this.”

“But he wants you too,” Nikita patted Michael’s arm. “I wish I would have had a parent that I was that proud of.”

Michael waited as Nikita eased back against the pillow. “Kita… we have to figure out what happened.”

“It happened once.”

“But one severe time is enough,” Michael licked his lips. “You haven’t seen a doctor since you left the hospital. I’m sure that there are follow up appointments that should have happened.”

“I was released against medical advice, Michael,” Nikita rolled her eyes. “I’m fine.”

Michael stared at Nikita and she turned her head to the side. “The only doctor I probably need to see is a psychiatrist but I can’t risk that.”

“Kita?”

“It’s nothing, Michael,” Nikita shook her head from side to side as she blinked her eyes. “Go to your son.”

“I’ll be right back,” Michael relented as he knew that Nikita wasn’t going to go anywhere in her condition and that right now, she wasn’t going to say anything about why she thought she would need a psychiatrist.

Maybe Michael could ask Tom about finding a real doctor that Nikita didn’t have to worry about talking to. She was probably concerned about the other injuries that a doctor could find on her from her years in Section and the lack of a medical record for those injuries.
