“Hey there, Sugar,” Walter crept into the room after he saw that Nikita was awake. Nikita turned her head to see Walter and then turned it away. “The kids were with you today.”

“They were almost done,” Walter shrugged his shoulders as he looked around the sparse room and found a chair to pull closer to the bed. “I heard that you had a tough afternoon.”

“I’m fine,” Nikita spoke as she looked down her legs and started to push her body to sit up. The heating pads had turned off a while ago and she was afraid to try to do something about that. She glanced at Walter and then looked towards the wall. “I don’t need a babysitter.”

“I’m here not only because Michael called… but because I care about you,” Walter stated as he sat on the chair and looked at Nikita. He didn’t understand the barrier that had grown between him and Nikita. She used to just trust him with everything and that changed.

After Michael left.

“I must have done something wrong, Walter. I’m feeling stupid,” Nikita shook her head but Walter didn’t buy it for one second. He reached out and touched Nikita’s hand. She pulled it away and Walter pulled away. He was frustrated and then he shook his head.

Enough was enough.

“What did I do, Sugar? Why are you so far away from me? I was the one that always got you… from the first day that you came into the gun range… till that day you set me free… I always got you when you allowed me too… but in the end… you didn’t even trust me, did you?’ Walter declared as he rocked back on the chair and then allowed it to fall down. “I would have done anything for you. I could have been your bodyguard.”

“And you would have protected me while I was pregnant? You would have found a way to keep the baby somewhere for me to have her now?” Nikita questioned as she looked towards Walter. Walter nodded his head. “I would have found a way, Sugar.”

“I couldn’t find a way,” Nikita spoke as she shook her head. “And I didn’t want your heart to break knowing that entire time… and then…”

Nikita turned her head away as she swallowed. The words had to come out. She knew that she had to speak them. To keep them in was only going to cause more damage. Nikita struggled and she slapped her hands down to the mattress as she grunted. “And then when I saw you for the longest time… I saw you walking out with my baby… just like I asked…” but it was a memory… I couldn’t handle that memory… So I pulled away…”

Walter shifted onto the bed and pulled Nikita into his arms. “Oh, darling… why didn’t you just tell me that? I could have found a way to help you get past that… a long time ago… and I could have helped you instead of getting out of Section… like I did…”

“I wasn’t sure if they weren’t doing something… that it wasn’t a trap. I wasn’t sure if I wasn’t going to be killed at the end too,” Nikita explained as she was in Walter’s hug. It felt so good to be in that hug. She leaned her head down onto Walter’s shoulder. “I couldn’t risk your life… not after what you did for my daughter… and I knew that you would find a way to tell Michael… although he may only ever know that she exists…”

“It matters that he learned, Sugar. Don’t you doubt that at all,” Walter patted Nikita’s back as he was just starting to feel like himself again holding Nikita unlike anything that he had ever been allowed to do with her. Walter pulled away and took the blanket and wiped the tears off of Nikita’s face. “You are going to be fine, you know that, right Sugar?”

Nikita looked away and shrugged her shoulders. She doubted what Walter was saying but she did hope that he was right. That was a significant change in her mind because it meant that she had hope which she didn’t have before. “Time, Walter…”

“I know,” Walter nodded his head up and down. He gave Nikita more space and then looked at the heating pads. “Those are turned off.”

“My legs are weak.”

“How long did you have the cramps for?” Walter asked as he pulled the blankets off and saw the good job that Michael had done. He eased one of the wraps off and made sure that the heating pad wasn’t burning Nikita. He then reached over and flicked the timer back on so it would start warming up. “So? How long?”

“I lost track,” Nikita admitted as she pulled at the blankets and looked at the switch. “The other leg too.”

“It is odd to have cramps in both calves,” Walter commented as he studied Nikita. She was staring back at him which told him that she knew that he knew that it was more than just her calves. “Michael said that you weren’t too keen on seeing a doctor.”

“It was my stupidity,” Nikita rubbed the back of her neck. “I just have not had enough water… or just messed up in eating… Or pushed it further than I should have.”

“I saw you during your training, Sugar. You cramped up once with a calf cramp and you always pushed it to the max… Michael always forced you to push to the max while you were training… so I doubt that you pushed it too far,” Walter spoke as he moved off of the bed and back to the chair. “Humor us.”

“I don’t like doctors,” Nikita declared as she turned her head away.

“Yeah… I know,” Walter chuckled as he leaned back in the chair and then dropped it. “Does Michael have any board games around here? How about Checkers?”

“I saw a Chess Board down stairs…” Nikita spoke and Walter shook his head. “Oh no… I’m not going to try to play Chess against you… after Jurgen taught you to play that GO game… nope… you were deadly in Chess from that point on… and if I’m going to try to beat against you winning to get you to see a doctor… I need a game that I might have a chance in winning.”
