Nikita placed the sweater down into the box and off to the side. She then stretched her arms and rolled her head around. “Ah… this has been great… but I’m getting a bit thirsty… do you think I can get a break?”

Michael looked underneath the tree and still saw a bit of gifts to go. But he couldn’t deny, there hadn’t been a break from the moment their plane touched down. “I could use something to eat. We were at the airport early this morning.”

Walter nodded his head. “I have some Chex mix made…. And we can do some hot chocolate…”

Michael stood and Nikita sighed as she looked up at Michael. She had wanted to spend some time with Michael alone. She was touched by the things that he had bought her. Along with the sunglasses, there were two shirts, the sweater she had just put down, an old fashion camera, and a book of pictures of Paris, where the original Section that Nikita had learned most of everything at had been based.

“I don’t know about the hot chocolate…” Nikita shook her head. “Just some water.”

“I tried Walter’s hot chocolate… he adds cinnamon in it,” Adam declared as he jumped to his feet. “And he is going to let me help.”

“He better be only putting in cinnamon in that hot chocolate,” Michael warned as he knew many times that alcohol would go into his hot chocolate when he would bring a thermos of it into Section.

“I’m not doing anything like I used to do,” Walter declared as he started down the hallway. Adam was looking at Nikita with puppy dog eyes and Nikita smiled. “How about I have hot chocolate and water? I can come out and help…”

“I think the three men can figure this out, Kita,” Michael winked as he pushed Adam out into the hallway. Michael wanted to give Nikita some breathing room and he had to talk to Adam about something.

Adam had sulked down the hallway and turned on his heels once he was in the kitchen. “The ring is not underneath the tree, Dad.”

Michael shook his head and Adam rolled his eyes. “Do you think that I’m that stupid? Nikita wouldn’t be able to handle that… you two are just getting things in order now.”

Walter was chuckling at the stove. “Michael… your boy knows you way to well… it’s almost scary how well he knows you.”

“That ring was a mistake,” Michael declared as he looked at Adam. “It wouldn’t be a ring that I would give Nikita… back then, it was a bad day…”

“It was Valentine’s Day,” Adam supplied and Michael rolled his head back. “Adam… please… that isn’t the ring for her.”

“And she won’t get it today. I didn’t wrap it,” Adam stated and then he half grinned. “But you forgot about the earrings you bought… that’s the small box that has you freaked out.”

Michael stepped back and rubbed his face. “Earrings?”

“Sapphires?” Adam supplied some information. He saw that his father was still forgetting them. Adam rubbed the back of his head. “You took me to one of those cheap looking pan for your own gold places… and while I was playing in the water and dirt you saw them in a case…”

Michael sighed in relief. “I know that they reminded me of her eyes…”

“Most sapphires do that to you, Dad,” Adam retorted and Walter laughed. “I do the same thing.”

“I didn’t just buy them because they reminded me of her eyes…” Michael remembered very clearly now. “It was because the place we were at was something that Nikita would have-“

“Taken me,” Adam finished and Michael nodded his head. Walter cleared his throat. “Now that your father can breathe a sigh of relief that there aren’t any rings underneath the tree, maybe we can let him and Nikita have a snack alone for a bit?”

Adam groaned but nodded his head up and down. “You can help me make stuff celery,” Walter added as he pointed to the table.

“Here,” Walter spoke as he pulled out a tray and started to fill it with the hot chocolate, two waters, a huge bowl of Chex Mix and two small sandwiches. Michael raised an eyebrow and Walter grinned. “Peanut Butter and banana…”

Michael took the tray into his hands and walked down the hallway. He looked into the living room and saw Nikita standing up near the Christmas tree, rubbing her neck with one hand and her hand on her forehead. “Should I have brought back something for your headache?”

“I don’t have a headache,” Nikita turned around with a gentle smile on her face. Michael put the tray down and moved to Nikita’s side. “You are a horrible liar.”

“I don’t want to bring down the festivities,” Nikita whispered as she felt Michael’s hands on her shoulders. She looked at the tree and swallowed. “I never really had a Christmas. Absolutely not in Section… and never really with my mother.”

Michael wrapped his arms around Nikita. “This is the best kind of Christmas to have then. You haven’t had to worry about shopping… or the planning… and you didn’t try to overdo with cookies… all the craziness isn’t there… so this is truly for you. Your special holiday.”

“Kind of like a birthday,” Nikita sniffled and Nikita pulled away from Michael. “How did you come up with this idea, Michael?”

Michael motioned for Nikita to sit down. He handed her the sandwich and the water. As she looked at the sandwich and then finally started to eat it, Michael got to the tree and retrieved the small box that he had been worried about. He held it and then turned towards Nikita. There was still a bit of fear that Adam was not telling the whole truth and it was the ring inside. But Michael put his faith in his son.

“I saw this box underneath the tree almost right away… and unfortunately, I forgot what it was… because there are a lot of things that I bought for you that Adam doesn’t know about.. and a lot of them I bought and then donated away… or returned…” Michael explained as he turned the box around as he move to the couch beside Nikita. He looked at the box and Nikita placed the sandwich down while tilting her head towards Michael. “How does this have anything to do with this Our Christmas thing?”

Michael laughed and pushed the box to Nikita’s hands. “Open.”

Nikita knew right away that until she opened this box, Michael wasn’t going to say anything that might explain anything. Nikita opened the box and for a moment felt sick as she saw the jeweler’s box in her hand. But as she opened it and saw the beautiful sapphire earrings, which were big, but not too big, Nikita was in awe.

“So, I got those when I had taken Adam to one of those tourist places that have you pan for gold. You’ll get some sort of gem stone in the pile of sand you get… Adam found a flake of a ruby and actually found a pretty nice moonstone…” Michael explained. He then placed his fingers over Nikita’s lips when she was about to point out that she still didn’t know how this answered her question. “Let me finish, Kita.”

Nikita nodded her head and Michael dropped his fingers. “I saw these earrings and I bought them… but I think what was more important was why I had taken Adam to this tourist thing that I would have never gone too.”

Michael could see Nikita questioning Michael with her eyes. He wasn’t going to make this hard on Nikita. “I thought about things you would do to help Adam with what was bothering him. I was his father, but in those few times that you spent with Adam, it was clear that you knew what he wanted… so I would just think about what you would do when he was upset… or when he was sad… and when I first got out of Section and had Adam… I thought about you so much…”

Nikita blinked her eyes and picked up the earrings and put them on. “Michael… I didn’t know that you even thought I was good with Adam back then…”

“You were amazing with him… but you worked your magic on me. I couldn’t have been the father I needed to be to Adam if you hadn’t given me emotions back.”

Nikita dropped her hands and kissed Michael gently. She shifted and leaned against Michael’s body as she turned her attention back to the sandwich. She turned and grinned slightly. “Walter made this sandwich to tweak you.”

“Yeah,” Michael nodded his head as he leaned down and bit some of Nikita’s sandwich and Nikita gasped. Michael chewed and chewed before taking a hard swallow. “I can get used to it.”
