Subject: I used a WL quote on a WL board... what was I thinking? (slaps forehead) Silly me!
In reply to: Julia 's message, "Re: No criticism should be made on your opinion..." on 10/14/03 7:30am

I should never have tried to be non-confrontational by stating, "you shouldn't be criticized for your opinion." That passage was to indicate that I took no personal offense to your opinion, and so that nobody else would make any remarks against it, but apparently "end of issue" means nothing to you in terms of neutrality and acceptance among your fellow posters. Since you were determined to have your say, please allow me to defend myself in turn...

1. "You took a serious subject and started to make it into a joke." Where do you get THAT? I made NO humorous remarks along with Colin's quote! I used the quote in the message line, then remarked on how sad the situation was. WHERE was the joke accompanying it? There was none.

2. "Colin was not demonstrating some ability to see into the future with when he made that Greatest Hits intro. He was making a joke." Again, where do you get this? I never said he was a fortune teller or soothsayer or psychic. My remark was on his OBSERVATIONAL skills as a performer, as a comedian, that he made a joke of it. Before this, how many comedians or other people were envisioning Roy Horn being attacked by his own tigers? I was pointing out how Colin's mind was able to take that extra step into a realm that few explore.

3. "Not everything in life is a joke or a time for you to try out your standup comedy routine." And where does MY sense of humor come into this situation at all? I made no humorous statements to demean the situation in the ONE-LINE body of the letter. There are no tasteless remarks like "Hope he tasted good," or "Horn got what he deserved." None! So where does this become a part of my "standup" comedy routine?

You're jumping all over me because of a quote and a one-sentence entry. The quote was not mine and the entry did not make light of the situation in any way. Roy Horn is going to be struggling for the rest of his life over this. The S&R show is going to leave hundreds of people unemployed or forced to switch jobs. The tigers may remain in their preserve and never entertain a crowd again. Laws are going to be changed and many things regarding the treatment of exotic animals are going to alter. I am more than aware of the social and emotional repercussions that will result from this one tiger bite.

I am deeply insulted that you would take a simple sentence, read too much into it, reject an attempt at maintaining a neutral stance on the issue between us (I saw it as reviving a quote and you saw it as insensitivity, and I THOUGHT we could end the issue there), and then proceed to try and dictate what is and is not appropriate to post on this board. If the board owners wish to ban me, that is THEIR call and I will not argue against it. If they strike a message that they do not approve of, again that is THEIR call and not yours; I would never re-post something that didn't make it up the first time. But when someone can't quote a single line from a television show on a message board ABOUT that television show... I don't know what to think any more.
