Yeah - Dick Shawn was the "actor" they picked to play Hitler because he was the sterotypic "hippie" who they thought could only help sink the show. And the playwright, I can just see the guy's face under the helmet and I know I've seen him in other things, but I can't put a name to him. Kind of the ol' Whit Bissell role....
My husband and his brother were real movie watchers as kids and they knew some of the, to say the least, obscure actors. One was Whit Bissell....the man showed up in literally everything, but especially westerns. He had an easily recognizable face yet he was never in lead roles and while obviously making a living for himself, never got star billing. So once I was introduced to "Whit" through my husband and brother-in-law, I have several folks I categorize as "Whit Bissell" types. (I'm sure you needed all that info... ~:o)
Occasionally we get road productions here in Detroit so I just have my fingers crossed. But we never get really big stars either although we did see a production of "Chicago" in Detroit that had Nana Visitor (Star Trek DS9), Vicki Lewis (NewsRadio) and Robert Urich (although he was ill the night of the performance.) And hey - we are getting Wayne and his friends in June so we aren't all that far out in the sticks!
>>Did you know it's now on Broadway with Nathan Lane in
>>the Zero Mostel part and Matthew Broddrick in the Gene
>>Wilder part? I wonder who is taking the Dick Shawn
>>role....I'd love to get to see it in NY!
