Does your community really still practice the BARBARIC ritual of shofar blowing? I don't understand how anyone can emit such earpiercing noises during the 21st century. Especially since the American Academy of Veterinarians has issues a policy statement saying "There are no apparent benefits to rams from shofat blowing". I understand that you feel a need for a religious ritual to welcome the arrival of a new year. In our enlightened temple we recognize this by having someone say "tekia, shevarim, truah" while we meditate over a piece of honey cake.
