He stiffens at the touch, startled, clearly unused to both touch and concern. He starts to reply, and his breath catches painfully, and he pulls away from her. Like a wounded animal, he seeks distance, solitude, not wanting her-or anyone- to see weakness, wanting to fight through his pain alone. He only makes it two step back before he sinks down to his knees silently. He pants, hard, desperate, eyes closed and brow furrowed with the effort of trying to breathe.
