• Everything was crazy in her life at the moment. She had made a resolution to herself- she wasn't going to care anymore. She wasn’t going to step over the shattered pieces of her family anymore. But the truth was, no matter how much Echo convinced herself she didn’t care, she really did. And worry seemed etched so deeply into her pretty face that it might never come out. With a sigh the thin girl came into the warm lodge, tossed off her snow covered running shoes, and hung up her coat. Her eyes wandered slowly over the unknown faces of the building. It was almost comforting, yet nerve-racking at the same time. This was a fresh start. The eighteen year old slowly made her way across the wooden floor to an empty spot on the couch. Just as she sat down her cell phone rang. Echo drew it out of her pocket, knowing exactly who it was, yet checking just to be sure. Yes.. so he was a jerk at times, thats what had come of his life, and most took it as him beinga rich snob, which was not the case at all. • Her eyes rose to the male as soon as he came in sight. She was one of those people who could notice every small detail in a room, no matter how big or small. But then the sea-green eyes wandered away, only to return to his lanky form when his deep vocals issued speech her way. For a moment her only response was a slight smirk, and a glance to the phone that continued to ring with the stubborn caller on the opposite end. Her eyes left the phone, quickly jumping back up to the male who, as he stood, towered over her. “Feel free to answer it if you want, but if anyone asks I’m not here.” She drew her feet up onto the couch, her arms wrapped around her slender legs and her eyes continued to state upwards at his before they moved down to the floor. • (**)He did what he was assuming she wasn't expecting him to do and picked up the phone, flipping it open he brought it to his ear.(**)"Yes.. how may I help you?"(**)He looked down at her, a slight smirk n his feaatures.(**)"I'm not sure, I will check... Is there an echo in here?"(**)He after waiting for a moment he want back to the phone.(**)"No.. I'm afriad the sound quality in here is quite fine thank you.. no problem with echos."(**)There seemed to be a it of a debate on the other line, before he was hung up on. • Of course she hadn’t been expecting him to answer the phone, so when he did she was obviously taken by surprise. Her eyes lifted and widened slightly, watching as he spoke to the ‘wicked witch of the west’- or that’s what Echo liked to call her step mother. She couldn’t help but let a smile grow on her features as she heard his side of the conversation. She wondered when they would realize that she really wasn’t coming ‘home.’ As he sat down across from her Echo gave him a half curious and half humoured look. “Well... that was interesting” She smiled slightly and shook her head at his antics. • “Yah right...” She stated simply with a half-hearted laugh. She was slightly curious about what Jackie had said to him... or rather, what she most likely ordered him to do. But she wasn’t going to care. She just had to keep reminding herself that she didn’t care anymore. Besides, even if she did ask, she wasn’t really sure she wanted to enter a conversation about family with a complete stranger. She leaned forward, and picked up the phone off the coffee table and tucked it back into her pocket even though she knew the next call wouldn’t be too far along. “What’s your name?” He obviously knew her’s. • Another look of surprise seemed to jump onto her features at his answer. One eyebrow rose as she tilted her head slightly and for a silent second tried to figure out whether he was serious or joking. Before she had a chance to react her phone rang again. This time when she checked it was her father. Echo knew better than to pull the same stunt on her father. She opened the phone and brought it to her ear, mumbling a “hello” to the deep, demanding and authoritative voice on the opposite end of the line. “It was no one Daddy... no...” She glanced up at him momentarily before glancing back down to her knees. Her father was speaking loudly, but she didn’t dare to pull the phone away from her ear “I’m not coming home... she’ll live without me...” For awhile she was silent as she listened to her father lecture her, but as much as she tried not to let it show, her face seemed to melt into the look of a disciplined puppy. • (**)He felt rather sheepish now, wonderig nif he had made matters worse for this girl who's life he didn't know a single thing about. He watched her, noticing the way she seemed to shrink in size, her spirit almost deflating. And he felt sorry for her until he told himself to stop being an idiot. • Finally, after listening to his lecture for awhile she cut him off. “Dad, I’m not com-... but-... that’s not fa-“ he had cut her off again, her patience for her father was reaching his end. She didn’t want to make a big scene in the lodge, so instead of continuing the conversation she just pulled the phone away from her ear and shut it “bye Daddy” she mumbled almost inaudibly under her breath. The phone was shut off this time and for a moment she considered taking the batteries out just to be sure, but she decided against it. Echo tucked the phone back in her pocket, before she remembered the male she had been ‘talking’ to a few minutes earlier. She glanced up, inwardly surprised to find him still there. “So... now will you tell me your name?” (NT) -- Echo, Sun, Dec 05 2004, 2:56pm PST
