Were you the last to know?
Were you left out in the cold?

She had called in sick that morning - asked her secretary to cancel and reschedule all her appointments - because she needed some time for herself. She liked to always be in control, and she liked her life to be organized and predictable, and she liked her family being perfect and flawless. Mothers like hers didn't have affairs - and why did they choose to tell her now, years later, on a random night, over the phone? With a quiet sigh of exaspperation - this was ridiculous - she dropped onto a swing and pushed off gently. Faded denims hung low from her hips and a light grey hoodie was unzipped over a thin white tank top - casual attire for the oddly cool summer evening...

She shrugged a touch and glanced to him, still smiling slightly - she was an open enough person it wasn't a big deal to share herself with him. "It was my parents anniversary yesterday, so I called to say hello... And they decided to tell me that my mom had an affair when I was like 12. Not really a big deal - just kinda freaked me out."
