+He sees the mare jump to the side at the last second and then catches sight of the tree directly in his path. He tries to skid to a stop but is going too fast, and it is too close. He twists his body sideways, digging his hooves into the ground, slowing him down just a little, but not enough. In the last split second before hitting the tree he moves with a lightning quick reaction. He leans back, putting his forelegs in front of him, bracing them for the sudden impact. He hits the tree with a sharp crack, splinters flying everywere. His hooves act as shock absorbers, and his huge body only brushes against the tree as he wheels around to face the painted steed again. One glance tells him that the other stallion is losing strength, but far from dead, and still willing to fight. He backs away from the flashing hooves, his face twisted in pain when one hits him on the shoulder, then the neck. He spins away, moving lightly on his hooves, circling his opponent. He stops suddenly, and stands facing the stallion, eye to eye. His icy blue eyes staring deep into the other equine’s. Giving him a chance to back down, and walk away with his life, while he still can. He leaves the steed to consider it while he trots back over to the golden mare’s direction. Seeing her pale form in the darkness, he snorts softly. A chill breeze blows over him as he plans his next move. Quietly, he moves downwind of her , staying blended into the shadows, his dark coat serving well for this purpose. He moves quickly but silently, knowing she is fully alert and could hear his hoof brushing one of the cold stones on the ground. He looks down, a sudden idea forming. He kicks one of the small stones, sending it deep into the shadows far away from where he is standing. It lands with a clattering crash in a bush near the golden mare. Then he charges again out of the darkness, while she is distracted by the stone, moving towards her with deadly silent speed, his anger mounting at every stride, moving carefully so as not to make so much noise, and he shoots into the bright moonlight again, making his raven coat a eerie shimmering blue, and his cold eyes reflecting the golden moonlight. He lifts off from the ground again, lowering his head to ram her again. This time, she didn’t have the few precious seconds to step aside…+
-Her eyelids open, her violet eyes exploring her new surroundings carefully. Slowly coming back to full consciousness. She looks over at her rescuer quickly, never having looked him over much before. Her ragged breaths slowly turn more normal, and quiet. She leans a little weight off him, and onto her own legs again, testing them to see if she can stand on them. She hears the sounds of the fighting horses and heaves a sigh, knowing it is useless. Her father would kill the horses, or let them give up, and stumble away half-dead, like he always did. Then he would come get her again and take her away. She tries to shake away the bad thoughts and turns her attention to the colt again, curiously, but still feeling faint and dizzy. She slowly folds her legs underneath her, settling on a bed of soft pine needles. Comforted by the sound of a kind caring voice she looks up at the gray colt when he speaks- my name is Falling Up… -reaches down to carefully nudge her swollen foreleg, then looks back up at him- what is yours? -she looks in the direction of the sounds of the fighting horses then back at him somewhat shyly- thank you for helping me… -she says quietly-
(She is 10 months old)
