The girl he hired was so clueless about baseball, Dejan figured out even he couldn't sell her work. That's progress considering he is such an insane egomaniac that he believes he could sell ice to Eskimos. But she didn't have even the requisite knowledge of basic statistics and he knew it'd lead to a lunatic uprising.

He didn't fire her, though, which is a surprise. He instead will allow her to hang around. He hopes she will grow into the job by working less important beats like Duquesne and Robert Morris.

Now he will go with the "any warm body not busy" approach to cover the beat. The Pirates beat reporter will be a combination of him and his crack staff of numbers nerds, Riverhounds rejects and Trib castoffs. That's not how a big boy beat should be covered but this is DK we are talking about. It saves him the cost of hiring another person, too.

A major issue on the Pirates beat at DK Sports is travel cost. One of Dejan's greatest scams is he has these people all convinced they can get reimbursed for travel costs through tax deductions. He pays for the hotel but that's about it. He doesn't reimburse for meals, he doesn't reimburse for mileage or gas or tolls, he doesn't pay for rental cars.

That gets very, very expensive if you are the baseball writer considering the number and length of road trips. Take, for instance, a ten-day road trip to the West Coast. Even if you only spend $40 a day on meals (which in cities like LA and SF means you are hitting McDonalds) you spend $400. By the end of the season the baseball reporter spends more on travel costs like food and fuel than he/she makes. Who wants to sign up for that?

That's why it is comical when he brags about how much his team travels. They do it mostly on their own dime, which journalists at real outlets who understand why that is a bad policy would never do.
