Does StyleTap have a chance of killing off all things Palm. I mean does this mean I can go and buy a Pocket PC knowing that Palm programs will work fine?

StyleTap is certainly an interesting development, but, as it stands at the moment, I do not think that it will kill "all things Palm". I think that its major impact will be upon people who are thinking about moving or experimenting with WM, but who are unsure. For example, when I moved, I was primarily concerned with the cost of replacing all my PalmOS software- I probably had more money invested in softare for the T3 than I did in the hardware itself. However, if you are able to try a WM machine, in the knowledge that your existing software is going to run, then it might make the transition easier.

I do not think that it will have much, if any, impact on those who are determined not to move to WM, or who see no reason to do so. The fact that you can run PalmOS software on a WM device does not mean that it makes sense to do so- as good as the emulation might be, if your sole intention is to run PalmOS applications, then you would be better off with a machine running PalmOS as the core OS. For example, look at Mac. You can purchase "Virtual Windows", which helps people run Windows software on MacOS. I would be most surprised if anyone ssaid that they have bought a Mac and Virtual Windows, for the sole purpose of running Windows software- if you have no interest in the Mac, then a PC would be a more sensible step.

PalmOS and WM are essentially on a par when it comes to stability- I have had no problems with either platform. But when you start running software within software, I wonder whether instability problems are going to occur- logically, there may be no reason for them to do so, but, it will be interesting to see how things pan out. There is very little (if anything) that a PalmOS machine can do that a WM machine cannot- but it comes down to convenience- if you have PalmOS software capable of doing a particular job, and would otherwise have to spend money on essentially re-purchasing this software for WM, then spending money on the StyleTap emulator might be a worthwhile step.

The bottom line, I guess, is that I can't see StyleTap killing off PalmOS, simply because there are many people who have no interest in trying a WM machine.
