Trimble calls for 'decisive action'
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has renewed his call for an end to all paramilitary activity and complete decommissioning by republicans.

He was speaking after talks at Stormont on Thursday with Sinn Fein leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness.

Mr Trimble told a party meeting in his Upper Bann constituency that he was still waiting for clarification about the IRA's future.

Mr Trimble said he wanted a clear answer from Sinn Fein on the "future status of their armed wing".

"Acts of completion must mean a completion to decommissioning," he said.

"The situation requires not a mere gesture towards decommissioning, but decisive action in a context where we can see an end point," he said.

The talks between Ulster Unionists and Sinn Fein are part of continuing efforts to broker a deal to revive the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Thursday's meeting was the fourth time in a fortnight that Mr Trimble and Mr Adams met for private discussions.

Speaking after that meeting, Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness said Northern Ireland's political parties had a fortnight to agree on reviving the political process.

He said the "mood music" had been good during the meeting and said he believed everybody was approaching the situation in the earnest manner which was required and that his party was dealing with people who "clearly recognised the seriousness of the situation".

Northern Ireland's devolved administration was suspended last October amid allegations of IRA intelligence gathering in the Stormont government.

Assembly elections were postponed in May but there is speculation that a fresh poll could be called before Christmas.

The Ulster Unionist chief and the Sinn Fein leader last met on Tuesday in talks which Mr Adams described as part of a "network" of peace meetings.

SDLP leader Mark Durkan also met government officials in London for talks on restoring devolution.
