Border army base 'to close'

25 September 2003

One of the last military outposts in the south Tyrone border area is to be razed to the ground in 14 days, according to a local politician.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone DUP representative and former Assembly member, Maurice Morrow, has revealed the military base in the cross-border town of Aughnacloy will close permanently within the next two weeks, after which it will be demolished.

Five months ago the Northern Ireland Office admitted that the Aughnacloy Army base was due to close before the end of the year under the Government's Joint Declaration.

However, a press officer for the Army refused to confirm or deny the latest report, describing the councillor's claim as a "speculative suggestion".

The Dungannon DUP councillor described the move as "a downright crazy decision made out of political expediency instead of military logic" and added that terrorist activity was still prevalent.
