I agree, there's a lot of obscure crap out there. But I honestly think things are changing for the better, if slowly. I recently read the Spring 2006 issue of Crazyhorse, a journal out of Charleston, SC and out of the four pieces of fiction they ran, all four of them were readable, enjoyable and had a point as well as a beginning, middle and end. And these are authors with impressive credentials and mile long CVs and Pushcart Prizes and all that, so it can't be a fluke. The last Paris Review I read, last summer, seemed similarly readable to me.

Are the Canadian journals lagging behind, still preferring the postmodernist stuff they've been tending to the last twenty or so years? Maybe. Certain of them are for sure. But I see them changing, too. Have hope. Keep sending out good, moving, coherent writing and you'll help things to change.

Cheers,

Lori
