Gene -

this as an obvious attempt by the talking-head pundits to spin America's declining economy - which you rightly posted about below - on the basis of very short term trends. This was reported more than a year ago. Since then America's heavy industrial manufacturing sector has continued to decline - the latest being major job cut-backs in the Automotive sector.

The Smokestack-manufacturing sector wasn't "booming" then - in spite of a very short-term uptick - and it isn't booming now.

Smokestack industry now depends on cheap labor and low operating costs (which translates as low environmental quality and worker wages and safety costs) to prevail on price in global competition. That's a competition nations "win" at the cost of the health, living standard and safety of their workers and the quality of their environment.

Thank heavens for all our sakes that the US - despite all the Bush Administration's efforts - hasn't yet been reduced to being able to compete on that basis with a third world country.

We've talked about this before. The America of your dreams - huge factories in every town churning out heaven-knows-what along with all the concomittant pollution - is most rational people's nightmare.
