Gwen -

that's one of the big threats of letting the DEC's wrong-headed decision on LaFarge stand. SLC Catskill has had a permit to burn TDF (granted under now outmoded standards, but still "grandfathered" in) for more than a decade. They've never used it --- so far.

They claimed at one point that they hadn't used it because they wanted to be sensitive to the concerns of their neighbors. If you believe that, I have bridge I'll be happy to sell you.

The reality is that they still have to install expensive pollution control equipment and do several test burns before the permit will be cleared - and they haven't wanted to spend the money cleaning up their act. But now, with the price of fuel climbing and LaFarge burning tires just a few miles up-river...well, it seems unlikely that they'll accept the competitive disadvantage of higher fuel costs.

Then, there's Lehigh/Blue Circle. If all the other cement plants in the neighborhood are enjoying the profit benefits to be gained from burning TDF, and the precedent for granting permits has been established by LaFarge, do you imagine they'll be content to slip behind?

That's exactly why it's so important to fight and fight hard against this irresponsible action by the DEC. Working together we CAN get this bad decision overturned - but we have to work hard at it, and we have to work together.
