History/Trivia
An electorate called Melbourne was first contested at the inaugral Victorian election in 1856, but divided into several seats in 1859. Melbourne re-emerged in 1889 and has been contested at each election since, being continuously in Labor hands since 1908. Former members include Barry Jones (1972-77) before he moved to Federal politics, and Neil Cole (1988-99). The Greens finished second in this seat in both 2002 and 2006, coming close to victory on Liberal Party preferences at both elections. At the 2010 election, Labor will agains be under threat from the Greens.
