FORMER Prime Minister Paul Keating has refused to sign a bottle of Grange which is being auctioned to raise much-needed money for multiple sclerosis research.
The bottle bears the signature of every living former Australian prime minister except Paul Keating.

Fundraiser Lina Marrocco said, despite repeated pleas to his office, she had been unable to convince him or his staff to reconsider their position.

The wine will be auctioned at the bi-annual MS Research Gala Ball on November 22 and Ms Marrocco said she had been attempting to secure Mr Keating's signature for more than six months.

"I approached his office when he was signature number two or number three and received a refusal and went back a second time after we got all the other signatures and said, 'I know you've said no but we've now got everyone except you - please reconsider'."

The answer was still no.

"I just think if it has all of the living prime ministers of Australia except one, it does reduce the value and it therefore reduces the amount of money going to MS (multiple sclerosis) research. I'm dumbfounded by the whole thing, to be honest."

Ms Marrocco said she had experienced no difficulty securing signatures from Kevin Rudd, as well as former prime ministers Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke, Malcolm Fraser and John Howard.

"They were more than willing to assist, given what the bottle is going to be raising money for," she said.

"The bottle is in storage in Melbourne awaiting this amazing telephone call from his office to say, 'We've reconsidered, we think it's a good cause, get it up to us'.

"We've tried to be as accommodating as possible by delivering it to Mr Keating and picking it up."

Radio presenter Helen Razer, whose partner has recently been diagnosed with MS, has also appealed to Mr Keating to sign the bottle.

"It'd just be a really nice thing to display at auction and by withholding his signature, he's withholding some value to the bottle. I can't imagine why he would not sign," she said.

A spokeswoman for Mr Keating's office yesterday refused to be drawn on the matter.

"Our correspondence is between us and (Charityworks for MS). I haven't got any more to say about that now," she said.
