I would agree that Jean Baptiste is not going to change. It seems like he wants to want to change. (If that makes any sense.) I would compare it to Claudius wanting to repent. Claudius wanted to make himself want to repent. It seems like this is the same situation. Jean Baptiste even says in the end that he would like to do it all over again so he could change what he did.
