Now, I know it will seem strange to take the Grand Inquisitor's part here, but, when reading the chapter, I felt like there was a love of humanity beneath his seemingly horrid actions. He took away mankind's free will because he believed it was a burden for them. He had tried the live in the wilderness, mortifying his flesh, attempting to make it on his own. He had failed, and he felt that mankind, too, would fail. Because of this, why should they not feel safe and secure here on earth. From his point of view, he is easing mankind's pain--a misguided action yes, but aren't intentions important. ;)
