Subject: Grand Inquisitor: Man Replaces God

“We have corrected thy work” (Dostoevsky, 13). The Grand Inquisitor is perhaps the most presumptuous man in the world. He, a clergyman of all people, places the work of man over that of God! He states that Christ did his work on earth, and now the church inherits the mess. He speaks for the presumptuousness of the Catholic Church: “We… proclaimed ourselves sole rulers of the earth” (Dostoevsky, 14). What can be taken from all of this? Man knew God, God died, and man replaced God (by making himself a God). The inquisitor says, “They will marvel at us and look on us as gods” (Dostoevsky, 9).
