I agree with you John. I feel that most of the Underground Man's suffering is internal, private. The cause of his suffering after all is his internal deliberations--his overconsciousness. It is because he cannot act and is sow caught up with deliberating as to the best possible way to exert his free will that he suffers. Yet, this is naturally a very internal suffering. I think that this may be why human contact is so painful for him: it is easy for him to suffer internally--he is used to it. Yet, when he is confronted with other human beings, he is forced out of himself, the suffering becomes open both to others and more clearly to himself.
