I definitely agree that his explanation for why he enjoys suffering makes a lot of sense. It does not seem to me, however, that his suffering is a way for him to be noticed. It seems to be a very private suffering. First of all there is his name, the underground man, which indicates he shuns contact with others. If this is the case, it wouldn't make sense for him to desire the attention of others, because he constantly isolates himself and shuns others. His reaction to Liza's visit also seems to indicate a private suffering. When she arrives, he doesn't want her to see the condition to which his life has lead him. But when she does see his suffering, it doesn't make him happy, he is completely ashamed.
