Subject: Garcin’s Identity

“A man is what he wills himself to be” (Sartre, 43). Garcin wants to will himself to be a hero and it seems that, for a while, he thought he was getting away with this. But, as Inez confronts him, this maxim falls to pieces. How can he will himself to be a hero when in truth he is not? He then begins to look for external affirmation of his heroism. Inez assures him that he is still not a hero. She says that it is now will that defines the person, it is his actions: “It’s what one does, and nothing else” (Sartre, 43). It seems at the conclusion of the play Garcin still wrestles with himself. He will not accept that his actions and not his intentions define his existence. My question: Will he ever accept this? Or, has he and I just didn’t pick up on it?
