I wasn't saying that we absolutely need a purpose to live, but I think that as human beings we want to be useful. We want to do things that show we have importance. That was what Gregor had at first. He had his family to support. Then he turned into a bug. Kafka seems to be saying that one has to be useful in order to live in society. You can only be a cog that works in the machine. There are no other alternatives. I don't think that is the case, but society today seems to be trying to make it that way. I agree with you in my point of view, but I think Kafka and society is saying otherwise.
