I think most of the stuff we’ve read in this class has been fairly depressing. However, what I think makes it really fantastic and intriguing literature is that it’s not usually depressing just for the sake of it. Instead, these pieces depict an aspect of life in a remarkably realistic way. They don’t candy-coat some of the realities and downfalls of human existence. In this world, there often aren’t these heroes or “good-guys” we often grow accustomed to seeking when we read a text. As a result, we find it tough to take a side, but in this, we actually gain a more realistic perception of ourselves (especially in such works we’ve read as No Exit, where each character has some unique flaw we can connect back to ourselves). So while this literature can be quite depressing and make us vulnerable to our greatest flaws, I find it all quite fascinating.
