Why is everything we read sooooo depressing. This is my least favorite. I read it right before bed and it gave me nightmares, but did give me a chance to think on it. The torture is obviously clever, how better to torture sinners than by themselves? It's a truer form of torture than anything physical. The other thing that struck me was how I at least, was looking for a character to be the 'good guy' and how as you read the play, you go from one person to the other and back in an attempt to find someone you are comfortable with. You never do, they are all bad through the core, and you alternatly hate them and try to find worth in thier honesty or lack theof, as hope that there still might be a soul inside eath of them that's worth something. It's very clever, but very depressing.
