Many of these works have been pretty depressing. I think this is due in part to the fact that many of them serve as an "Elijah without a Messiah". They portray with extreme accuracy the faults of human beings and into what we can deteriorate. They convict us of all our faults. This is part of what makes them so great and effective: they effectively capture human nature, so we can see ourselves reflected in their work. But they do not include the other, very significant part: that we are not stuck in this condition, that we have a way out which is beyond ourselves. The absence of this hope is what leaves us depressed.
