Subject: Intro to Critique Essay

William Blake’s “The Little Black Boy” is a seemingly simple poem about a black and a white boy and their arrival into Heaven side by side. This simplicity that makes up this poem is only surface deep, however. Symbols and imagery are plentiful, from cloud and sun imagery of God and His love, to the symbol of the racial divide of blacks and whites through the relationship of the two boys. Together, all of these abstract concepts weave a tangled, complex web that may be hard to interpret. One must ask what is the point of taking simple concepts and putting them together in a complex fashion. Jacob Adler views the poem in a similar fashion, though he errors in the message that Blake truly intended. Jacob Adler gives a reading of this poem that moves in the right direction, but is not spot on.
