These characters do like to meditate on what hell is but its because..they are in hell. As far as existentialism goes, the idea proves this point. These people have lead not so great lives and all of a sudden they end (their lives that is). And they go to hell because they lead terrible lives. Now that they are dead they cannot change anything they did in their lives and are stuck being in hell because they can't change their lives. "A man is the sum of his experiences," "the essential self only becomes a fixed form at death." This is exactly what existentialism is.
