Just another question, Joel:

Does this disease of over-consciousness seem to be critiqueing existentialism and pointing to the need for God and an established moral order? Reading it, I felt like the UM was so wrapped up in his own existence and his own control over his existence that he became more and more introverted. I pictured his mind sort of like a screw being twisted against some metal, grinding away, making no progress, becoming more and more warped. Completely in control, he has nothing really to turn to but himself. What do you think?
