Perhaps their presence in either scene indicates their role as witnesses - and players - in the passing of an ideal, with all the good and bad that that ideal involves. Their positive sentiments regarding the books strengthen with respect to Don Quixote to a degree proportionate to the loss of the knight himself, rather than just the stories. It's sad, sobering, and a subtle detail. Nice catch, ACGREEN.
