Subject: relationship between Sancho Panza and Don Quixote: my essay prompt

The relationship between Sancho Panza and Don Quixote is a rather complex one. They first begin as purely knight and squire, master and servant. It is clear which is which, and the two tend to stick to their roles. However, as their adventure progresses, so does their relationship. Early into their adventures, it is very apparent that Sancho serves the role of the simple- minded squire, and is somewhat skeptical of the motives and even sanity of his master. Yet, as they share in many different adventures, the two grow closer and the distinction of their roles seems to slowly disappear, as does Sancho’s skepticism. In the essay, focus on the development of the relationship between Sancho Panza and Don Quixote, and especially how each character is affected by the change in their relationship. Focus especially on the differences between when the two first set out on their adventure (Book 1, Chapter 7) and some of their first experiences of “knight errantry” together (Book 1, Chapters 8 and 9), and when they return (Book 1, Chapter 52; Book 2, Chapter 2), and how these differences reveal the change in Don Quixote and Sancho Panza’s relationship, as well as their characters.
