Yeah, the first time I read Hamlet through I thought the Ghost might have been something of Hamlet's imagination as well. Of course, my hopes were smashed on a second reading. I guess Shakespeare arranged it that way to avoid the "Hamlet is just insane" reading. Well, in that he imagines the Ghost's appearance and commands. I think it's still fairly ambiguous as to whether Hamlet is crazy...or at least how crazy he is.
