Subject: If anybody ever had relationship issues...

I’m troubled by the scene in which Hamlet confronts Leartes over the grave of Ophelia and declares that he really did love her. Pshaw. Hamlet is the most distasteful antagonist ever! How could we care for a character who is so indecisive and yet so brutal? I’m especially incensed over his treatment of Ophelia. What is her crime that he should treat her so? Hamlet truly has an affection complex. He claims that he loves his father, and yet he can do nothing to avenge him. His father’s ghost charges him no to take out his anger on his mother, but he does anyway. Hamlet hates Claudius for obvious reasons, but he also detests leartes and Polonius, even before he has reason too. His normal attitude is one of resentment. It is Ophelia who takes the brunt of his frustration and anger, and she is the one who he claims to love the most. Does he love her? Did he ever love her? Is he even capable of love? His confession of more love than forty-thousand brothers could ever express seems to be purely self serving, I don’t think he means a word of it. Hamlet is so weak a person that he not only has no strength to kill; he has no strength to live or to love. He simply exists because he is lily livered and chickenhearted.
