The actions of Hamlet are of interest. Hamlet’s “humanity” comes about from his acts. His hesitance speaks to his character and “humanity.” Goethe’s commentary on Hamlet reads: “All duties are holy for him” (Hoy, 154). This paints Hamlet’s delays under a light of solemnity and pensiveness. He must anguish over his premeditated acts in order to ensure they are holy acts. Avenging his father by assuring Claudius goes to Hell are perfect examples.
